Sargie appeared to be half-trained when I got him at 4 months - never goes in a bed, on a sofa, etc.; gets up in the middle of the night and goes on the pad (or, at times, on a throw rug near the pad by mistake). But he still (after a month) leaves the droppings on throw rugs around the house (usually near, but almost never on, the pad). I figured, well, everyone says this is a lonnng process...could be a lot worse. Then I read about the spray and buy the spray. What does he do? He starts licking it madly off the pad. And the old habits continue!

Are there any other stories out there of puppies liking the taste of the spray? I note it has "fatty acids" in it...but...c'mon!?

scruffy has licked it when it is wet many times - maybe try to let the spray dry & then put the pad down on the floor.

i'm interested in this potty training spray you are talking about. what type of potty pads are you using? are they shreddable like newspaper? do you recommend that they can be duct taped down for the puppy that shreds? do you think that crating and then graduating to a gated area with these pads and the spray on them is a good course of events?

I don't use the pee pads just layers of old newspapers.
But - the pads are like cottony material with a plastic liner under them. I have heard there is a Square pee pad plastic holder.
I never crate my babies, I just use a puppy bed in a small gated area with a newspaper area & a play area with water & dry kibble food ofcourse.
Maybe Instead of the puppybed you can use your crate just leave the door open.

DAY - whatever, I've already lost track - like five? - OF THE TRAINING SPRAY

Okay, Sargie has stopped licking it - waiting till it dries works. However, he still isn't using the sprayed pad (I have one sprayed, one unsprayed - testing, you see, always testing). He uses the unsprayed one, which isn't even a doggie pad - it's just a plain bedliner (friend had them left over from putting near her cat's box - wanted to get rid of them). Sargie has no problem wetting on the unscented pad. He will also go on the doggie pads (without spray). Either pad with spray, makes no difference. And he still usually leaves the droppings a few inches away from any pad. He's a gem at holding it - but he can't get the knack of where to go when he goes. I'm also afraid to move the pad to a more appropriate place (it's in the living room, because that's where he started going, even though I was trying to force a kitchen deal) because he will go right back to that throw rug in the living room. That's why I hoped the spray would lure him into compliance...not having a whole lotta luck. Glad it works for some - hope Sargie finally gets the message.

Sorry to hear that. I feel your pain. I was the one that started this post saying how great it is-and it is great-but it's not 100%. harlem, started out really great but he sometimes looses his mind and goes back to old ways even with the spray being used. So it helps but nothing is going to be the ONE, I see that now. Just time and patience I guess. good luck and i would try moving him to the kitchen or bathroom instead of the living room. Good Luck with everything.

Not really working for Tucker either. In his X-pen area he is pretty reliable about going on the pee pad with no intervention but he still poops wherever he wants. Once we get downstairs, though, forget about it..it's open season on the carpet so we got the spray in hopes he would use the pee pad. I got excited earlier because he used the pad downstairs independently but then a few hours later, peed on the carpet again. Ah well...patience....

That started happening to my Roo. She's almost 4 months old and I decided it was time for her to stop having accidents all the time (ALL OVER) and I started crate/pad training her. Before this she had used the pad pretty consistantly (like maybe 50% of the time) after this she stopped peeing on the pad completely but would still poop there. I let her go for a few days back to her normal just running around in the kitchen. Then yesterday I started crate training/taking her outside and it's been amazing! Not only is she going outside but she's also using her pad inside! So if you have time for crate training you might want to try that (i think the key is leaving her in her crate over night too)!

Yeah, I used that stuff too and it worked for me too. My problem was that I had to buy a big ol thing of it & it only took a few times using it before Sadie got the idea, so I had a bunch left over.

Oh yay! i'm so excited to try this. i live in an apt and cant take my pups outside to the potty that often. I end up just following them around and cleaning up after them
