| potty training while confined hey all. i was wondering how those who have their babies confined to one room, like the kitchen, train them to go in one spot? i had them in the xpen for about 3 months and they were doing pretty good,. so i thought i would give them the kitchen. the first day i find pee all over the place. so i put them back in the pen. they are 7 and 6 months. i would really love for them to go outside but they won't tell me. how do i get them to go in one spot and how will i get them to tell me when they need to go?

| Hmmm...I don't really have any ideas on the going in one spot thing. As far as them telling you they need out: Well each time you take them out have them do whatever it is you want them to do to tell you. Our bloodhound knew how to "sing" or speak so each time I took her out I would have her "sit" beside the door and "sing". It wasn't long before I would hear her barking and I'd look over and there she was sitting beside the door waiting to go out. She was a breeze to housebreak too. With Reagan she picked up scratching at the door on her own. We had started having her speak each time but somewhere in the midst she ended up scratching so we left it at that. Bells are a good idea too and there's a ton of threads about them, you can probably search potty bells or something. Reagan never really got the hang of bells, we tried this before barking. I will say though that she didn't like big bells at all. Anything bigger than 1-1 1/5 inches would scare her. But there are a ton of dogs using them, they just hang bells beside the door and the dog noses or paws or shakes them when he/she needs out. I've also heard of people using those bells that some hotels have where you tap the top thing and it rings.

| Thanks for the added information. Now that I reread your first post, I realize that there was more that I should have asked. The biggest question is: Where do you want to train them to potty? In the kitchen or outside? While some people have success in training their dogs to go 2 different places, it's usually easiest to pick one or the other and focus on that. In order to newspaper train in the kitchen, I would cover the entire kitchen in newspaper so that they have no choice but to go on the newspaper. That way, they get used to the feel of the newspaper under their feet when they are going and will eventually develop what is called a "substrate preference" for the paper. You can then gradually decrease the amount of the floor that is covered by paper until there is only a small area. If you are wanting to train to go outside, you could keep them in the newspaper-lined xpen anytime that you can't watch them with an "eagle eye". There are tons of threads here about training to go outside so you might read them. As far as letting you know that they need to go out, I've had great success using a bell hung on the back door. What I have found to work best, is to simply suspend a bell from the door knob. It will ring naturally anytime the door is opened. You can occasionally give it an extra ring as you open the door to call their attention to it. They eventually learn that bell ringing = door opening. The tricky part is being there when they first make that connection. Then, anytime they make the slightest jingle of the bell (whether accidental or not), you have to run to open the door. You have to open the door everytime they ring the bell whether they just want to go out to play, whether they just went 5 minutes ago, etc. Only then will they get that "I ring the bell = Mom opens the door". My experience is that it's best not to try to teach them to ring the bell on command. You soon have a dog that will ring it when you tell him to but he thinks that is all the bell is there for. It takes much longer for him to get that ringing the bell means going outside.

| thanks for the info. i covered most of the floor in the xpen. hopefully this helps. i would cover my kitchen but i have little ones running around and i don't want them in there with all that paper. so i think i will try it in the xpen first and get them to go in one spot so if and when i do let them have the kitchen they will only go in that one spot. (the xpen is already in the kitchen ) my husband wants them to go outside, bit i don't have a fence so its not easy to just let them out to go. we were looking into an underground fence... i'll have to post a thread about that! thanks again

| I'll look for your other thread, but I really don't recommend underground fences, especially for Yorkies. Never mind that they shock the pup, they also don't protect your pup from what might come *in* your yard. IOW, they don't keep out big dogs, wild animals, or yorkie-thieves.
