HELP!!! jumping on furniture to pee - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Maci, my 8 month old yorkie has specifically started jumping up on my furniture and peeing!!! she is house broke and goes outside and i watch her do her business but then about 2 hours later or sometimes less she jumps up on my brand new furniture and pees all over it! it's microfiber too so i'm freaking out trying to clean it. she did this even before we bought our new stuff but only in the last 2 months has she started this. she has always been on a schedule to go outside, as soon as we get up in the morning 9-10am, again at 2pm, again at 5pm and then again around 7-8pm before bed. idk if she's just trying to get my attention or what but this has to stop!!

she's not fixed which females usually aren't territorial like males and we had thought about breeding her possibly in the future is to why we haven't had her fixed but now that she's so small and we know she's not going to get any bigger (2lbs) she's too small to have puppies she may be getting fixed soon if that's part of the problem! even catching her in the act she takes off running and knows she's done bad because she hides from me.

Have you brought her to the vet to rule out any health issues such as a UTI or bladder infection? Is she behaving normally otherwise? Have there been any changes and/or stress in her life lately? And by the way, female dogs can also display territorial behavior.

Maybe she just needs to out more.....is she drinking more now than she used to? I know my 2 year old guy goes out way more than 4 times a day! If it is happening 2 hours after she has been out could be a big clue she needs more trips out the door!

I'd think maybe she needs to go out more. My Teddie is a bog boy at 10 pounds and since it is hotter here now he drinks more. So he even goes out 8 times a day at least. These little bladders don't hold much for long... Good luck!

sorry i just got back to all of you. things have been crazy since i posted. no changes in anything around the house. and she is usually really good about letting me know when she needs to go out. she hasn't been drinking anymore more than usual either. i think she's just trying to show her butt and get attention. she's also pooping on my floor as soon as she comes back in too! we can stay outside for 30 mins but as soon as she comes back in she poops on the floor. this isn't every time but at least once a day. it's like she's too prissy to go outside.

Just an idea but maybe if you've stopped giving her treats when she goes outside, you could start again. Also, I would restrict her to one small area of the house, or in a crate, until she is doing ALL her business outside again. She's definitely testing your boundaries, and it seems like it's become a game for her. You need to let her know you're still in charge and have the power to restrict her movements within YOUR home.

Yes, it sounds like she's testing your boundaries and you need to restrict her movements and assert yourself as the leader. I know dogs don't do things "for spite" (at least that's what the experts say), but my female Bichon would poop in the middle of the living room floor if I went out on the front porch to visit with someone and didn't take her. She was 100% potty trained and knew exactly what she was doing. She would be sitting beside the poop looking pleased with herself when I came back inside. She didn't hide, didn't act guilty, just pleased with herself and looking me right in the eye. They understand a lot more than most people give them credit for!

Sounds like you need to start potty training from the beginning again...confining her in the house when you can't watch her or go out...and at 8 mos she is no where near fully potty trained...thats where alot of people make their mistakes, they think after a few weeks of potty training, everything is going good, no accidents, they are trained...potty training is a 24/7 job that never ends...praise praise praise, throw a huge potty party and giving a treat after every good potty habit is the key...Yorkies love attention and to please, once she see that you are happy with her and she get a treat for it, she will continue to try and please you cause she wants that attention from you...if you stop giving that to her...she is going stop too....meaning she is going to do something to get that attention, potties in the house, she gets the attention she want...good or bad...Successful potty training starts and ends with you...you have to be consistent with her schedule...And YES female can be just as territorial as males, if not more so....Having her spayed may stop the pottying on your furniture, what she is doing is marking her territory and at 8 mos old if you spay her now, there is a very good chance she will stop that...but you have to be consistent with getting her outside to potty.

I would start by confining her at all times in the house...get a play yard or xpen...they have enough room for bed/food/water on one side and a potty pad on the other for those "I just can't wait any longer"..taking her outside every few hours...when taking her outside to potty, talk to her...say...lets go OUTSIDE and POTTYin a fun and exciting voice...once outside continue to say..go potty, hurry up,when she does her business, throw a potty party with tons of praises and a small treat she really likes...than take her back inside...don't give her any play time outside during training...cause you want her to know outside is potty time not play time...once your confident she will do her business before play than start letting her play a little while ouside...and remember most have to potty...first thing in the mornings, after eating/drinking and after any play time and always before any nap or bed time.

IF you catch her in the act of pottying in the house...say NO in a very firm voice, don't yell at her...the tone change in your voice will be enough to make her stop and take her right outside and say..go potty, good girl...letting her know this is where you want her to potty....if you find a potty accident in the house but didn't see her do it....don't make any kind of fuss over it to her...just clean it up...with a good odor cleaner like Natures Miracle...making a fuss over it to her will give her the attention she want and she will continue to do it...and you must clean any potty stop with a good odor cleaner...if you don't she will smell it and potty there again and again....Good luck.

Or maybe your bichon panicked when you went outside and pooped with fear...then was pleased when you came back in and she realised you weren't leaving her!?
You were right the first time, when you said that dogs don't do things for spite.

she is more likely to be running off because she knows you are angry. Do you get cross with her, or act calmly and just clean up the mess?
Unless you say 'no' as she is peeing or pooping, she won't know why you are angry. Remember she is still a baby at 8 months and still learning.
