| My puppy eats only 2 times a day :( I'm only feeding Rusty (9 weeks old) 2 times a day!! He doesn't want to eat in the afternoon :/ I feed him at around 8/9am and he doesn't want to eat anything untill 9pm. What is going on? I just got him started on Canidae dry kibbles, is he being a picky eater or? Is it dangerous if he only eats 2 times a day? He seems fine and his peak activity time is around 1-2AM. Yes, in the early morning :P I'm just worried... CK |

| Such a good question, and I'm anxious to see the responses! I have a picky little eater too, and there are days when I can only get her to eat two meals! I feed her dry puppy food as well (Purina Pro Plan Puppy for Small Breeds), which is what the breeder was feeding her, so I don't know why she won't eat well for me

| I noticed with Gracie, she would not eat well for the first few weeks she was home. It took her some time to settle in. I would supplement her with nutrical puppy formula at the noon hour until she started eating three times a day. When she was about 6 months or so, she flat out refused lunch so I figured it was time for her to go to twice daily feedings.

| Once a day !! Boget for as long as I can remember eats his food once a day (usually at night) although he gets a chicken strip & carrot in am when I leave to go to work. It has worked great for us.

| Have you tried hand feeding him his dry food? That seemed to work well for Jake when I first got him, and then he settled right in. |

| He seems awful young to only be eating two meals per day...Do you leave the dry food out for him all day?

| It took Riley a good month with us before she had a true appetite. It seemed she was never hungry. Now the little thing will eat any chance she gets! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | At 9 weeks, he should be eating every 3-4 hours, at least. I would highly recommend you feed him some home cooked food and/or canned food (high quality) as soon as possible.

| From the time I brought Memphis home he was not a good eater!! And being so small the breed made sure that I knew to make him eat... And just incase he went into a sugar low ( something about small dog going limp???) the breeder gave my a needle and sugar water injection formula. But when I took him to the Vet the next week, she suggested nutrical puppy . Which Memphis loves ( more than his food!!) The vet said it was okay that he only eats twice a day and to give him the nutrical through out the day!! Memphis loves the sugar solution so much I began teaching manors and tricks with it. The three weeks into having him he came down with diarrhea all weekend. He weighted 1.25 lbs at 8 months and that weekend he went to under 1 lbs. I was so scared and only thing he would eat was Nutrical. And the three RX I had to make him take. ( By the way the vet could not find anything wrong!!!) Now he is 5 months old and still eats twice a day !!! But very health and active.

| I would talk with your Vet, to see what amount of food your pup should be eating. She/ He would have the BEST answer for you. Like I said earlier I talked with my vet and she stated that Memphis was fine. And at 5 months old now ( 20 weeks) he weights 2.5 lbs, and thank GOD he is very healthy. I still leave fresh food out for him all day, but he picks in the morning and picks in the evening. My vet says "Memphis is just a Dwarf!! But a very healthy and active one." I was just trying to reassure you, and to give you advise regarding your post. It also seems that many of us that posted on this thread, have picky eaters. Maybe over eating is not a Yorkie trait..... I personally don't know!! But talk again, with your vet. And I do honestly wish you the best of luck!! * I made an error in the last post Memphis was 2 months old not 8 months when he was sick!! Sorry about that.

| Our furbaby is now 8 mos and we have had one heck of a time getting her to eat first every 4 hours and then every 6. She will not eat in the morning and when she doesn't she usually winds up throwing up. So we jump through hoops trying to get her to eat. We lure her with honey-nut cheerios to her plate, we flip kibbles onto the floor. She'd rather chase her food and eat it off the floor. She hates Nutracal, so that doesn't work well. The only way we sometimes can get her to eat is to give her a mixture of baby cereal and strained meat for babies in a syringe. Then after a while, I'm guessing when her tummy settles down, she will eat. |

| I've only had Roo for a week and she has very selective eating habits- she definitely won't eat unless she wants to which I think is normal for puppies? (that's how my other dog was when she was a pup) and she mostly only eats twice a day- and not much at either sitting but she seems to be doing well! We don't really feed her treats yet as we want to encourage her to eat more but mostly she just eats her breakfast and her lunch and then if she's going to eat dinner she doesnt eat it until late! Although I have noticed that she would definitely eat my bigger dog's food given the chance (even though Taya- my spaniel/rot mix eats the little bites- they're still way too big for Roo's mouth) but of course we don't let her! I just think it's funny- the food in the other dog's dish is always better! =) |

| My Owen is a picky eater too. I went thru the same thing when he was little. He's 1 1/2 now, and he still a fussy eater. Try mixing the dry food with some beef flavored baby food. I would nuk the baby food for 10 seconds and mix it with the dry food. You should also be giving him some nutri-stat. It's loaded with vitamins/nutrients. T |

| Well, if he seems healthy and isn't sneaking off to eat other things, then I would say it's fine. He just might not be hungry in the middle of the day, or maybe he's eating so much in the morning that it lasts him till dinnertime? Anyway, after 1 year most dogs only eat 2 meals a day. (Just FYI, Nutri-Stat isn't good to give ALL the time. It spikes the glucose levels, which obviously come down after awhile and then you're back at square one. Sort of messes up the body's natural system.) |
