Help with whinning and sleeping conditions - Page 2 - YorkieTalk.com Forums

she's doing this cause she don't want to be alone. She is having anxiety. You may want to get a crate and put it in your room so she can be close to you.

Or better yet, get a 2nd puppy!!!!!!

Yeah a second puppy would help but at this time we are not going to do that. However I want to say thanks to everyone about the crate it seemed to work really well.

We stuck her in their about 9pm last night and she whinned for about 15mins and then went to sleep. She whinned a couple of time during the night, however it was only for a minute or two. So over all she slept from 9-5:30 which I thought was good. Then I took her outside and she went potty then brought her back in for a little play time and then she went back in the crate. Then we slept for another 2 hours. So I guess she is learing to like her crate, as long as it is in our bedroom where so can see us at night.

Yea...I'm so happy that Jasmine slept in her crate and was quiet most of the night!!! Be patient, she'll understand, they need guidance in these early days, and she needs "rules, boundaries and limitations" I know sometimes it seems cruel, but she'll be a happier dog in the long run. Congratulations to you and Jasmine for a job well done...don't give up!!!

Yeah I think she is getting used to every thing now which is good. I know it will take some time. However I think we are off to a good start with everything.

The only thing that kind of concerns me is that she might have gotten a flea from going outside? She seems to scratch in one area a lot. I have combed her with a flea come and I couldn't see anything.

How long does this whinning at night go on? Are we talking weeks or months?

She did good the night before, however last night she was up every 3 hours. Then I would take her outside for about 10-15mins and then put her back in her crate. Then she would lay down for another 3 hours or less and that is the way it went all night.

Did she have to go potty everytime you took her out? She may just want to be up and about with you

You'll eventually learn her cry for "I really gotta go potty" and "Hey, I wanna play!" I put an old t-shirt of mine in the crate and that helped keep mine quieter longer. When she cried in the middle of the night I just stuck my fingers in the cage door and she laid against them and fell back asleep. I could tell when she really had to potty cause she would start squirming and making a different cry. Hope that helps a little bit

I took her out twice and she went potty once and then when I got up to go to work this morning she went again. Of course she didn't make it outside and she went potty on the potty pad, which is okay. When she starts to cry I look in the crate to see what she is doing. If she is laying on her bed and crying then I just let her go for awhile. If she is up by the door and pacing back and forth then I take her out. So I guess I am on the right track it will just take some time?

Yup, sounds like you're on the right track to me

I too was sleep-deprived for the first several weeks but it does get better, so hang in there!

That's wonderful!!!

Usually they like small confined area's, somewhere where there not so overwhelmed. You also might want to put a stuffed animal in there with her or her own blankey. You may want to sleep with the blankey for the first night so it gets your scent on it, then put it in her crate so she feels she is with you.

Sounds like you are off to a whineless puppy!!!!

Ok, lots of knowledgeable folks on here and don't want to overwhelm you, and in the end, you have to do what works best for your situation. I myself am a crate person. I've trained many dogs and have had decent success with the little ones (and one not good success!). When your wife is off have her work with the crate. PUt a few treats in the crate and a chew toy and put pup in (use word such as "house" Crate" whatever). Put pup in for 5min to start, do not take pup out if whining or barking, have pup quiet b4 you take her out. Try and up the time frame in the crate, another thought it some people actually feed in the crate, the object is for pup to learn the crate is a good thing and most dogs will learn to love their crate but it takes some longer then others. I started with my pup in the crate in the bathroom but he whined soo much, so I brought the crate up next to my bed and he is quiet, if he does whine, I tap the crate and say "Quiet" or SHH or something. Just trying to reassure. Never put your pup in the crate for punishment, or he will resent the crate and hate it. Make it a positive experience.

Well I think for the day time we are going to keep her in the kitchen which isn't that big. That way she can see out the sliding glass door durning the day. I will also leave the radio on so she can here something.

I thought about putting her crate in that are as well so that she will have a place to sleep. However I don't want to keep her in there all day. Because if I stick her in there then she will have to be in there for 8+ hourse which I don't think is good.

My worst fear is that she is going to freak out in that area. So with my wife being off work today and tomorrow I told her to start putting her in that area. I think the best thing to do is start off with a 5mins or so and work our way up. Any thoughts?

Hommie, it gets better. Tucker has been home for a week and we've only had two sleepless nights. His crate is in our bedroom and I discovered that by putting a sweatshirt and a pillowcase that smell like me in with him (plus wearing him out during play time) he goes to sleep with very little crying. Good luck!

Yup, if she's going to be alone for 8+ hours the kitchen area sounds like the best way to go. Maybe you could put her crate in there with the door removed so she can go in and out as she pleases - it worked for me
