Help with whinning and sleeping conditions - Page 4 - YorkieTalk.com Forums

She did good the night before, however last night she was up every 3 hours. Then I would take her outside for about 10-15mins and then put her back in her crate. Then she would lay down for another 3 hours or less and that is the way it went all night.

Humm, sounds like a human baby. I totally remember lack of sleep! And just like a human baby it does get better. Remember, you are dealing with a baby here, and she is new to your surroundings, it is going to take time. It might take a week, it might take months, it all depends on your persistence, patience, understanding, etc. Try to have some type of schedule that she can get used to. You are definitely on the right track, but yes, expect some restless nights but do your best to stick with it, your pup deserves it.

P.S. Ask anyone on this board and I would bet 99% say that housetraining was at the top of the list for frustration.

oh Layla did the 3 hour thing for a few months... we were TIRED... but it does get better

I have a few more ideas before I give up. I think I might try one of those snuggle pets. Anyone used those before?

Is that the one that you heat the inner part in the microwave? If so, I think PuppyLovinNurse has that for her Chloe and swears by it

Yeah you can heat it and then you put batteries in it. That way the puppy can feel a heart beat and be warm at the same time. I think for $20+ it might be worth trying.

Jasmine, Hope you sleep all night tonight...maybe if she plays real hard before bedtime she'll sleep better. Winston has slept in bed with us since he was 6 months old, before that he was crated, right up next to my side of the bed. Really it's not that unusual to get up with them once a night, they're so little...their bladders can only hold it so long...I think 4-5 hours is pretty darn good. But he's 3 years old now, and rarely do I get up thru the night with him, he sleeps like 8 hours a night...straight thru...She'll get there!!!

LOL! That is so true!! Hommie, please don't give up on your baby. This is the probably the hardest time for new parents to puppies. Your baby WILL whine, you WILL lose sleep. But I promise you, it DOES get better!!! Maybe not in a week or a month. It could be 2 months or 3. Just remember, your little one is a pack animal, they want to be with you. When you brought your puppy home, she was taken away from everything she knew all of her life. You are her new parents, pack leaders, she is just looking to you for direction. These sleepless nights will pass! I used a crate for my two little ones at night, but I put it on the bed with me. That way I could wake and let them out when they needed to go. Once your baby is comfortable in her new surroundings and comes to understand this is her home and you always come back to her, it will get easier. The payoff is sooooo worth the sleep lost and the patience required for these little butts.

I would be happy with 4-5 hours at this point. It is more like 2 at best. I usually play with her for about 45 mins before she goes to bed and that still doesn't make her tired. However she can slep great during the day by herself..LOL

Hommie, I completely understand and know EXACTLY what you're going through! My Lola is 15 weeks now, but when I first brought her home, she cried ALL NIGHT for 10 straight nights! I was so exhausted, and my job was suffering! I tried everything! Finally, on night 11, she slept! It was a miracle, and I literally cried with joy. She now sleeps (or lets me sleep!) from 11pm - 8am.

I do use a playpen, rather than a crate, but that's certainly a personal preference. I also bought the SnugglePuppy, but Lola didn't seem to love it, but I was so desperate, I was willing to try anything. I do keep a pee pad in her playpen, so that she can go if she needs to, and I know that may not be the best training, but I will slowly remove the pad. She only goes on it once during the night, and it's only #1.

I promise it will get better! I know it doesn't seem like there's any sleep in sight, but she will eventually learn your routine. HANG IN THERE!

Now if only there was a miracle for potty training?!

Having a puppy is such hard work!

She is doing better she will at least go in there now without any trouble. She whines for about 10 mins and then goes to sleep. She will then sleep about 4 hours and have to get up to go pee. I think I might try taking her for long walks before I put her to bed. Maybe that will wear her out a little.

You're getting some great advise here. I love the Pet Pen Lola's mommy showed in her post, that's exactly what I was looking for...3 years ago...too late for me, but it sure might help you(if you don't already have something like that). And going for a walk before bed, as you suggested is a very good idea...but she's so young, be careful where you take her until she's had all her shots. But hey, 4 hours is getting better!!! Does she go right back to sleep then for another 4 hours? Maybe that's just wishful thinking...Keep up the good work, how's she doing with everything else, potty training, eating etc...

We have a big long driveway and I walked her up and down that tonight we will see if that helps a little.

After she sleeps for about 4 hours then she will go outside and go potty and then come back in and go back to sleep for about 1-1/2-2 hours. Then after that it is about 1 hour and she is ready to get up. Which is okay because that is about the time we get up to go to work.

I think she is doing good with everything else. She eats and drinks plenty of water during the day. She now knows where her food and water is and she will get it on her own. She is also doing good at potty training. We take her out and she goes almost everytime. We are also getting to know when she has to go as well. We just make sure to give her ALOT of praise when she goes outside. She has had a few accidents in the house as well, but when she does she seems to hit the potty pad.

This is our first pet and we didn't think it would be this much work. However it hasn't been that bad and it will only get better. Not to mention she is a blast to have around. I guess this is a good test to see if we ever want to have kids...LOL

So how'd Jasmine do last night? I do hope it does get better with time. They are definitely worth the time & trouble. Once she gets it, it will be smooth sailing and they really are a fun little dog...enjoy!!! Sounds like she's doing everything else pretty good, of course they do go thru stages, and yes this may prepare you for having children, although I don't know anything about "skin kids" as I never had any, only "fur babies"...Gotta love 'em!!!

Well I have a different veiw....(im a softie) I have drug my son's extra single matress into my living room floor and I sleep with my fur baby....I did it with my 2 year old also until she could get off and on the bed with help from a upside crate. Now she is a full time bed sleeper (still needs the crate tho) and he sleeps from 11-4 or 5 we go potty and back to sleep. No whining, no stress and both getting our sleep! Lucky my hubby works mid night so he is only alone for 1 hour a day. When we have to leave or go away in the evenings...I hire my daughters best friend to sit. Just like a baby lol I know it's probably worng but it's just how I do it.

I think she is getting better. She only woke up once to go potty. So if it stays like that for a little while I can live with that.
