He's just not getting house broken!!

He shouldn't have to spend his time in a crate. Buy an expen and attach it to the front of the crate, put a wee-wee pad at one end and a toy and chew at the other. Put a water bottle on the fence and start taking him outside every hour and praise when he goes. Never let him have run of the house while he's in training.

Duncan is about 9 months old and still is not potty trained. Anyway, has anyone else had SUCH a hard time crate training their yorkies?? I feel like he spends more time in the crate than out and it really breaks my heart to see him in there.. However, he can't just keep going in the house whenever he wants. I got a dog so he could hang out and be part of the family, but the crate training has him in there so much that I feel like I have a rabbit instead. Does anyone have any suggestions/advice/even words of support? I'm started to get so frustrated and feel so helpless..

In the morning, after he wakes up, he needs to potty. If he does not potty take him for a walk, he will potty outside while walking. Praise him and give a treat that he never gets before. This treat should be used only when he potties outside or while walking. After meal you can also do the same. I have the same problem with my chelsea before and I take her for a walk to make sure she potties. It works. Walking after meal or waking up will stimulate your dog to potty.

Try feeding him in the dining room. He will start to associate the dining room with eating, and not want to poop where he eats.

Crating him is the key. If he does not poop and pee when you take him outside, it's back to the crate for him. He will soon learn that he will gain more freedom when he poops and pees outside. When he does have accidents in the house, just ignore them, but praise him like silly when he does it right. Dogs live in the "here and now", not what they did a few minutes ago. Like you said, he will not understand when you try to take him out after he did his business in the dining room. If he is just starting, or right in the middle of doing his business, just quickly pick him up and take him where he needs to go. When he finishes going, give him a big party! I know it takes a lot at the beginning, but it is all worth it in the end. Just keep on keeping on! (I know, easier said then done!) Hope this helps!

It took FOREVER to get my sophie potty trained. We would just take her outside all the time. usually about 30 minutes after eating. Fortunately having a fenced yard helps so she can go out whenever she wants. But when we used to live in an apartment she hated pooping while on leash. I think they just get picky about where they go and how they do it. Sometimes, if you scold them while pooping they think that pooping is bad so they hide. I had the same problem with sophie at first. Just be consistent about feeding and going out. Sophie really came around when she was one.

Oh my goodness, I think we have the same dog.. lol. Duncan's place of choice is my dining room as well!! sheesh

thank you! after reading the advice I got last week I started to really take him for some brisk walks.. (before we were just going on leisurely strolls) That seems to make him need to go more, which is great! However, he is just soooo easily distracted, that even while he's going I guess he'll just stop halfway and try to find the source of a sound/movement-- I'll think he's done, bring him in and he'll finish up inside. Lovely... This doesn't happen every time so it's hard to tell when he finished up, or if he didn't

You can even time it. My dog will poop at almost the same spot while walking. This will work as well if you take your dog somewhere where you know it is time for him/her to go potty. Just take him/her for a walk around the block and usually this will stimulate them. This helps me alot since I know after she/he did his/her business outside he/she will not do it again in the house.
