| Non-Leglifting Puppy In Training... Grr.... As many of you know, we've been trying to train Bentley to "GO" in his area *kitchen*, but he will only potty in there. Not poo. But whenever we let him out of his area into the living room, he'll poo anywhere he pleases, even pee. When we got him, he was neutured, so he doesnt lift his leg and it's difficult to tell when he's going because it's just like he's standing. We never really know unless we step in it. Anyone have experience training a non-leg lifting puppy?

| Percy never got around to lifting his leg either before he was neutered. It is hard since they are low to the ground as it is, but, he squats so that helps. Also, try to look for signs that they are about to go, like, sniffing in circles (that is my guys big one) or tucking their back legs (usually when they have to poo).

| In my opinion, teaching your dog to go on wee-wee pads or on a specific area in the house teaches them its ok to "go" inside..period anywhere. Get rid of the pads & try bringing him outside & confine him to a crate when he is alone. Good Luck! Lynne

| Gordon's breeder had already started him on puppy pads. I agree with Pooky. I switched him to going outside and we no longer use the pads. I started outside training him a couple of months ago and he hasn't had a accident in the house in two weeks......but I still keep him confined to whatever room I'm in and keep a close eye on him whenever he is out of his crate. He has not learn to ring the bells yet to let me know when he has to go. Gordon doesn't lift his leg.....he does a slight squat.

| Pee pads are a mistake ( I guess its ok if its cold outside) but I feel they are a big mistake, I use to use them too, but mine think that every throw rug is a pee pad and they use them as such, its so hard to break!!

| We have had great success with the pee pads...The pee pads are in tiled areas (bathroom, and laundry room), and both doggies go potty there (#1 and #2). Miko also squats when he pees, but we can tell when he's peeing. Look for sniffing and circling to tell if he has to go potty. Try to catch him in the act when he pees somewhere he's not supposed to...And put him on his pad immediately so that he knows where to go. When he does pee on his pad, make sure and make a big deal out of it, and be happy and say "Good boy" emphatically and give him a treat..He will be so happy and he'll figure out that it's good when he pees there.

| I agree with Lynne 100%. The only times I have used peepads was in the initial period of training these little ones. I have always eventually trained them to the outside "totally". Not to mention my husband is against a dog doing its business in the house! I know alot of people buy Yorkies/small dogs for apartment living and therefore the inside training works for them and I understand, but I also think that sometimes the dog does not understand that the entire house is not the "bathroom". With diligence, a dog can be trained to use the peepad, just like a dog can be trained to use a specific area of the yard, but it has to be so consistent and regimented until it is 100%. If you take your dog to his spot and he does not pee/poo then he only gets run of the house if you are watching him like a hawk. If you let him run without watching him and he has a mess, then it is your fault and not his at this point. When my dogs have a accident it is generally MY fault as I didn't catch the clue they gave me to go outside. If you can't watch him he must be confined to a crate or small space again, only until you get this under control and he becomes totally reliable. kathy |

| Yes, it is hard work to get the dogs trained to go in a specific area...My yorkie was not allowed free reign of the house until he was 100% potty trained...
