Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | from day one i took morgan outside. i would just stand out there until she went and if i got tired of standing there i would take her back in and put her in her crate. Five minutes later i would take her back out again and wait till she went. After she went potty we went back inside for a treat and then she got outside the crate/expen play time for a half hour. Morgan is really good at holding it now. on the weeks she can go 12 hours because mommy doesn't want to get out of bed she stays in her crate all day while i'm at work (sometimes 9 hours) and doesn't make a mess. ocassionally we will have a set back and i'll come into the room and find a puddle but that only happens usually if i neglect to take her out or wait for her to do both 1 and 2 outside.

| Hi!! We pottied COMPLETELY outside also!! It was cold in January when we got him, but we still went outside every 1/2 hour, and then he would have free reign in our kitchen area for the first month, and once the accidents were getting less and less we let him in our family area too. It took about 4 days for him to realize that all he had to do was potty and then he could get back in the warm house. My lil guy slept from about 9:30 until 5am for the first few weeks, but then he realized he didn't HAVE to get up when my hubby got up for work and now he sleeps until the kids get up at 7. And on weekends he'll sleep until we all get up at 8............going to bed at 9 pm. My lil guy was finally potty trained ONE WEEK before he turned 4 months, but CONSISTENCY is the KEY!!!! He is now 4.5 months old, and he goes to the door and if we aren't watching, he will nudge the bells we have on the door........but I am usually STILL watching very closely. He can now make it 45 min. to an hour in the house without going out. We worked VERY HARD at the potty training and we didn't relax even ONCE, because I figured, if we work REALLY HARD at it for a few months (we got him at 2 months....8 wks)it would pay off, and it has!!!!! GOOD LUCK, it is a LOT of work!!! But work hard now and get it over with, or be casual about it and not consistant now and spend the NEXT YEAR having accidents and frustration............and STILL a NOT POTTY TRAINED DOG. |

So I prefer to trained them to use the litterbox first...but if the weather is nice I take them outside... I have tried potty pads but they would end up shredding it...so i gave up and started using a litter box...with cat litter...

| By the looks of it on a GOOD PORTION of these posts, people have a much harder time training them in their house than they do training them to go outside. I would think if you could put those wee wee pads down in a WHOLE BIG AREA for them to choose from, it'd probably be a lot easier.....trying to stick them on a little pad I would think would be just way too difficult. |

| We tried the litter box... but he sunk in the litter (i bought the litter stuff and the box from Petsmart)-- so that didn't go well. Then we tried the pee pads-- he didn't do well with those either. We now go outside and he's doing great. He holds it all night (while in his crate) and he holds it all day while I am at work (while in his crate). We go out exactly every hour when I am at home and he is not in his crate. |

| Also Trying To Figure Out How This Works Hello, I just got my puppy 3 days ago and I have not been successful in one attempt to have her use the puppy pad or the litter box. I figured I'd stick to only one, but this is my first puppy and well you can imagine how I felt at the pet store. I wanted everything. Anyways, I tried to clean the pee that she made on the floor with the puppy pad so that it absorbed the scent and that way she'd know to go there again next time. Well she didn't. I've been watching her like a hawk, so everytime she squats, I grab her and carry her to the pad. She won't go though. She'll just hold it. By the time I grab her, she still has tinkled a little. What can I do? Should I start focusing on using the litter box instead? |

| I didn't really have trouble pad training Pepper. He'd have an accident only sometimes, and stuck to the pad also in other places like my work or hotel. BUT when I tried to switch to the outside, he doesn't go outside. He holds the whole day until we get back to his 'beloved' pad. Now I tried to put the pad outside to give him the idea of actually pottying outside but I'm not sure how successful it will be. He's not tiny anymore and it would be easier if he went potty outside. I would have dont it differently if starting potty training again... lol

Is there any way to transition her to go outside?? if so, how do I do it.. we live in a building so going to the elevator, getting dressed is such a hassle... also, does anyone just let them use the pee pad forever?? Oh, Missy just turned 4 months old on March 23rd.

No Longer a Member | Chloe is 6 months old now, and she has been completely house-broken for over a month now. We actually started on pads and newspaper, but I quickly decided that this was not for me. So we went outside. The first time, she looked at me like, "uh...this is grass...what do you want me to do with it?" I tried bringing the peed on newspaper outside, but that only blew away in the breeze, and when it did stay down, the spongy grass underneath made it feel wierd to her; she was spooked by it. So, I just took her outside, sat down in a chair on the grass and waited for her to pee pee. When she did, I praised big time, gave her a treat. After that, she understood what the grass was all about. I did find for poop, it helps to have a turd in the grass. If she sniffed her turd, (sorry to be so graphic ) it seemed to stimulate her to poop. So I started by taking her out every hour (more frequently if she was playing because when they play they wanna pee). I also found three places that she would not potty: in my arms, in her little bed, and in her crate. So if I could not be watching her like a hawk, I'd either hold her or put her in the crate. The key, I truly believe is, to NEVER let them out of your sight unless they are in the crate or something. And this is what I did. Those times that she would start to go potty, we'd clap real loud, say "NO!" and take her outside to the grass immediately, then praise and treat when she did it outside. Even if there is no way to stop the pottyng at that moment, you want to startle them from that moment and show them where they are supposed to potty. The point being to educate them on where they are supposed to go rather than expecting to stop an accident in progress. This took some time to get my husband to understand. He'd say, well, it's too late, she's already got the turd half out of her butt. It doesn't matter. Startle and re-direct. Now, if you come across pee or poop that you did not catch happening in the act. Forget about it. You made the mistake by not watching her. They do not understand if you show it to them after the moment has passed and scold them for it. Crate. Watch. Schedule. Startle. Redirect. Praise. Treat. That about covers it. |

Don't be discouraged when they pee and poo inside.......just TRYING TO CATCH them in the act is what is SOOOO important!! They can only learn by making these mistakes, but the few mistakes they have INSIDE and the MORE POTTYING and Pooing OUTSIDE with the praise and treats........the faster they will learn. By 3 mos, we were having only about 1-2 pottys in the house a week, so I could really see it starting to click!! I caught my guy pooping 3 times in our house, and I YELLED "NO" which startled him, and I quickly grabbed a tissue picked the turd up.....and w/ the turd by his face (NOT IN HIS FACE) I carried him outside to put the turd outside and said "POOPERS OUTSIDE" Scruffy knows the commands for "POTTY" and "POOPERS" and he's 4.5 months old.

| potty training Coco is my first Yorkie. She is 8 wks old. I just got her last week. She will pee on her pad with no mistakes, but she will not poop on the pad. She will sniff then walk off the pad and poop several inches away. I know she is still young but I wasn't sure if this was a trait of Yorkies and if I needed to do something different to train her. I have to say, she is extremely smart and has learned from our cat on how to stalk and has started turning the tables on the cat. Too cute. Any suggestions on the training is appreciated. |

So give it a try. Just like a peed on pad helps them pee there again, maybe a little poo on there will help.
