| I wish I could help you! Hi! I really wish I could help you. I am having problems with my little one also. He will not sleep in his crate at night, All he does is cry and bark. I don't know what to do. I have not got much sleep since I bought him. I have had him for about 2 weeks. I thought he would get better, but it's worse. If anyone has any ideas please help. Thank you! |

| Ok, this is what I think: 1. He either does not like his crate and he gets anxious to be in it, because he knows you are leaving, etc. and therefore he goes potty in it. It is involuntary for him and he cannot help it. Or.. 2. He has learned a bad habit of going in the crate and unfortunately, when this behaviour becomes learned or reversed from their natural instinct (because it is more natural for them NOT to do it where they sleep), then you are going to have a real hard time correcting the behavior. If he is doing it because he is anxious, then getting a dog hormone diffuser plug in near the crate may help calm him and help with the problem. If he is doing it because of reason #2, then I think you are going to have to "re-think" the use of the crate. (I do understand why you are using it) So you may have to go to some other method of containment, like an x-pen. I think you may have to commit to "re-training" him on the potty issue. The first thing I would do is get rid of the crate and get an x-pen. Make the x-pen, real homey. Put a bed in it and his toys. (No food or water while you are gone) I would paper the floor inside the x-pen with newpaper. When or if he goes inside, he will go on the paper. He may even start to go in a specific area, hopefully away from the bed and toys. When you can see that he is picking a particular place in the x-pen to go, you can start removing the paper where is does not go, little by little until there is only one area of paper left and hopefully he will only go in that area. If he goes on the open floor, you will need to replace the paper in that area and start again with the removal, but more slowly. In the meantime, when you are home, you are going to have to keep him tethered to you. Since he likes being with you anyway, this should not be too much of a problem. When he is tethered to you, you can keep a good eye on him and prevent him from going in the house. When it starts to look like he is sniffing around take him outside immediately. If you catch him while he is going, make a sharp noise to get his attention (so he will stop) and pick him up and take him outside to go potty. You will need to keep this up until he no longer has mistakes. Any time he whines take him outside to potty. He may get the hint that whining gets him outside. Never punish him when you find a mistake. It's too late by that time. Ignor it and clean it with a neutralizer. But either keep him by your side or in the x-pen. After a while, you can put the paper on the outside of the crate to see if he will hold his potty until you let him out. He may have to go and start to whine in the x-pen staring at his paper. If that happens take out immediately. Always, always, always, treat his good behavior. Always, ignor the bad. Take him for a long walk, about 1.5 miles a day. Yes even in the cold weather. He will be a much better puppy for you if you do. It will get rid of some of stress for the day and he can urinate all he wants too. I hope that helps.

| I forgot to add: never put your dog in the x-pen without taking him out to go potty first and when you take him out of the x-pen, same thing, outside to go potty. You have to establish new good habits and help him forget the old bad ones. So it's potty all the time, potty all the time (outside that is)

| Watch everyone scream!!!! Since your dog weighs 12 pounds, I would assume we're not dealing with a little puppy. Why don't you get rid of the crate. Wrap a bellyband around him and let him run around the house....and enjoy life! Set the timer on the stove and take him outside at least every hour - to start. My dog runs around the house with a bellyband on (not all the time - but a lot of the time) - and I take it off and take him outside often - and he almost always pee's when we go outside. PLUS - he rarely wets inside (I know - because he's wearing a bellyband) The bellyband is really for "just in case." This way, I'm sure he can't damage the carpet, etc. Personally - I hate crates! (I think they are fine for short periods of time - or you need to put your puppy someplace where he'll be safe for a while ==== but being in a crate a lot of the time just isn't something I can do.) And since your dog has already decided that a crate is a bathroom - I'm not sure you can undo that! Good luck! Carol Jean |

| Bellybands do solve a lot of problems. When my dog was a pup - I'd put one on him and let him have full run of the house. What fun for both of us! Today he's 14 months old and still wears one occasionally. He nevers pees when he's confined to the kitchen when I'm at work (6-7 hours). I put a bellyband on him before he goes to bed for the night - but it is always dry in the morning - only a few exceptions. During the day - or whenever I'm home - I take him out every two hours or so - and he good about peeing outside. He wears a bellyband around the house most evenings because that's when I'm working in my office - and don't get him out as often as I should - but still with the bellyband on - I don't have to worry and he can't do any damage. **** He has worn bellybands at least part of the time since he was a pup - and could care less. Once he dashed out of the house with a bellyband on and ran over, lifted his leg, and pee'd on a bush -- still wearing the bellyband. PM me if you have any questions --- Carol Jean - Or run a scarch on my posts -- I have posted everything I know about bellybands often. Carol Jean |

| You can purchase bellybands - I just use washcloths (terry cloth) I fold a washcloth diagonally and wrap it around my little boy's belly - and then pin it with a diaper pin. It is wrapped around a male dog's tummy area -covering up the area they pee from. So -if they pee - the bellyband or cloth catches it (like a diaper) and they can't pee all over the house or on your carpet. This is for little boy dogs!!!!!! And - if a little boy puppy is wearing this - you can just let him go and run all over the house and play play play and not worry about your carpet. But, you should check it often and change it immediately if it is every damp. These are wonderful for little boy pups that sleep with you also. Good luck! Carol Jean PS: Of course, bellybands don't catch the poop -- but I have never really considered this much of a problem anyway - You can just pick it up and flush it down the toilet and it doesn't do any damage. |

| I agree, getting an ex pen is the best solution. I have trained most of mine that way. What I do is set up their ex pen to where they have their bed, food/water and toys and pads. I don't expand the x pen all the way and I make sure that there is no space left. That way they don't have much of a choice other than to go on the pad. After doing that for a few weeks I extend the pen to where there is space not covered or taken up. Since they have been going on the pad the past few weeks they learned to go on it. If they start going in the empty space I make the pen smaller again. If they go on the pad like they are suppose to, the pen gets bigger. After some time I have the pen fully extended with a pad in one area where they are going on the pad everytime. Once they reach this point I take them out of the pen and leave them out inside the house all day, except when I am not there, and I leave a pad in a specific area. The pad is never moved from this area. Since they have learned to go on the pad because of the ex-pen training, they will go over to the pad. It has been working really great for me. The pen taught them the basics on house training. I even have 3 month old puppies who are learning this way and are doing really good already. There are sooo many things you can try. I am glad you are willing to work on it and not give up easily like so many others have. Good luck with the training!!
