| Bart trying to nurse from my other dogs! Hi. About 11 days ago, we added an adorable male Yorkie - Bart - to our home. He's about 12 weeks old. We have two other small dogs - a Lhasa and a Shih Tzu, both females and both very friendly and sweet. Bart is very friendly and desperately wants to meet the girls, but everytime I put him down, he tries to nurse from them! They tolerate him, are curious, and even sniff him (while he's in my arms), but the minute I try to put Bart next to them, he's going for their bellies! I mentioned this, and the fact that he's indifferent to his food, to my vet. She suggested putting Espilac (a milk replacer) on his food. The Espilac has helped with his eating - chowing down 3 times a day now - but it hasn't curbed his enthusiasm for the girls' boobies. They're confused - so am I! Does anyone have suggestions? Been through this before? Thanks. |

| My guess is that he will outgrow it and it isn't harmful to his health My pups are about five weeks old and aren't nursing from mom anymore but they still try and and they try to nurse from their dad, whose boobies are kinda small I think, but they still try. My guess is that puppies are like human babies and they have that sucking instinct and try to satisfy it. We give human babies a binky or a pacifier. Wish they made some for tiny pups!

| My girl did this to us! She will still occasionally try to suck on my shirt or ear. And she was bottle fed so I wouldn't expect her to be doing that but she has started to do it less and less. It is very annoying to hold a dog and constantly have her attack your shirt or ear lobe to nurse. |

| thanks Well, I certainly hope he outgrows this soon! I wish there were some sort of pacifier. Perhaps that's a business opportunity... |

| Sounds like the same problem here too. Maggie is 10 weeks old. We also have heelers. My female heeler hates everyone and anything that even gets close to me. When we brought Maggie home, I was very concerned what Pepper might do. One chomp and Maggie would have been lunch. Well, I would have lost a fortune if I had placed a bet on it. Pepper allows Maggie to search along her tummy for something to eat. Pepper also brings Maggie toys to play with. When we are outside and I'm telling Maggie PP, PP, my heeler will PP beside her, then just look at her like this is what you are suppose to do. I'm still in shock. Pepper has never in her life had a heat cycle or even been around puppies. She sure does have a great maternal instinct. Great baby sitter too. |

| If I hadn't seen this thread a few days ago, I would have never known what Cooper was trying to do yesterday. I picked Cooper up from the breeder on Friday - will be 10 wks old on Monday. Carter rolls over on his back and Cooper roots around wanting to nurse on Carter! It is hilarious! It is very amusing watching these two yorkies together!
