What treats should I use to train my baby boy? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

I have a brand new baby yorkie - he's 10 weeks old and we just got him two weeks ago. He was being really good with the potty training and going outside every time I took him out there. But the treats I've been giving him have been giving him diarrhea

I originally bought some tiny little regular dog bone treats, but even when I broke them up they were still way to big for his mouth. Then I bought some Milkbone Original Dog Treats that say they're great for training, but they're still way too big for my little Ferdinand. So finally I bought some Pup-peroni Lean, and cut them up into little bite size pieces for him. However, like I said earlier, these seem to give him diarrhea... which is a mess for me, and can't be fun for him.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to use for treats to train him? He seemed to be learning really quickly, but I stopped using those treats, and now he just runs wild and never goes potty outside anymore.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions! This is my first puppy on my own, and I've never had a little dog, let alone tried to train one.

Hi Britta...welcome and congratulations on your new baby! I've always used Best Buddy cheesy bits...you can get them at Petsmart I think, I buy mine at a small pet supply store. Here's the website to order them if you want to take a look: www.exclusivelypet.com Click on the link for dog products, then on the tab at the top for products and you can see what they have. My boys love them and they're small so they're great for treats or training.

Okay, this what I just learned from Annika's trainer. . . dogs can't chew and pay close attention at the same time when training so make sure that we do not give them treats that are crunchy (as they get distracted with the noise) as well as take too much time to chew. Anything soft and very small is better . . . I use to give Tiger the Natural choice treats ($2.00 at petsmart) and they are these mini steaks - so cute. These days, I buy those humongous sausages and then just cut them to pieces . . put everything in the freezer and just take out a good portion to leave in the fridge. I give Tiger bigger portions as he is slightly underweight right now per his VET and Annika just gets a tidbit as she is bordering obese

I looked at PetSmart and didn't find the Best Buddy bits, but I did get some chewy Nature's Recipe training treats that are also chewy. We'll see how it goes. I sure hope they don't make him sick like the pup-perroni's did.

I just want to make sure he's a well trained dog so he doesn't follow under the typical misbehaved small dog stereotype.

Oh I think that is the right brand - Nature's recipe not natural choice . . in a very small container . . I am such a dork

Anyway, I am not sure if you have seen this but I posted this a while back. I was giving them cut-up mangoes, which they love so much and will do anything for it.

I used Cheerios and Kix from day one with potty training and Obedience Training, it worked great, no problems, and they are not filling and they are cheap.

when snickers was training her trainer said what works best is something with a really strong smell to it... pupperoni worked excellant with all the dogs in the class... just break if off into small peices

Anna Bell lowered her cholestrol today, she loves cheerios as a treat, they are cheap and effective.

I too have a brand new baby, and I am starting to train her as well. I did pick up some of the Nature's receipe treats shaped like little steaks, and Maci loves em.

They should work great, and they're not too expensive either. I found them at Petsmart.

I just used little bits of white bread. Sometimes part of an oatmeal cookie or something. The pieces weren't bigger than an eraser head.

I tried the honey nut cheerios, but Gracie just likes to play with them. I guess she is too young for those. What works best for us is the Canine Carry Outs. I crumble them up into small bits, so all Gracie has to do is just swallow. Makes a bag of treats go a very long way. She does not get diarrhea from them.

I've found that the Natural Balance roll works great. I can pinch the tinest bit off and they are eager for more. I also had great results with Cheereos but don't use those in class as the girls get filled up way to quick and then loose interest. Right now I am working with peanut butter to get them to ring the dang bell to go out!

Loki was prone to diarrhea as a pup. I found that wet treats or treats higher in protein made him sick more than dry treats. Try Charlee Bears or Cloud Star's Itty Bitty Buddy Biscuits. You can break the BB into smaller pieces too - they are already tiny. Also, his tummy is going to be SUPER sensitive at 10 weeks, so limit what you give him. What kind of food are you feeding? I found that once I switched to Canidae, random treats stopped making Loki sick. We tried lots of other good brands that made him sick! You just have to find the right one for your dog but experimenting is messy!!

Also, can you just use his kibble?
