| Having potty problems with my little girl Hi Everyone I desperately need some help with my little Tink. I Love her to bits and she is such a wonderful little dog....my first Yorkie and I will have to say that I am definitely hooked on this breed! But she is now 11 months old and still cannot hold her pee for more than 2 hours.I think she should be old enough by now to hold it in at night but she's not. I finally had to put a puppy diaper on her at night because I am exausted from not being able to get a good night sleep. Could she have some type of bladder problem? I know she had a hernia operation when she was a few weeks old and before I adopted her but I have no clue if that could be the cause of it. Any thoughts or suggestions would really help! Thanks so much! Rita |

| I just wanted to add that she does not wake me up at night to go out...she will just pee and go back to sleep....I just kept getting up to let her out and hope that I caught it in time. Thanks, Rita |

| A trip to the vet wouldn't hurt. Loki has nighttime incontinence, which is just like a kid wetting the bed. He pees in his sleep and doesn't wake up at all. He's on a very low dose pill that's taken care of it. Now, if she's waking up, standing up, peeing, and then going back to sleep that could be a training issue. Is she in a crate at night? A tiny one? Also, how much water is she drinking? Maybe stop giving her water around bedtime? Loki loves water and will drain an entire bowl if I'd let him. Slowly over the last year we've been working on that and he will now mostly drink when he's thirsty. But he's thirsty in the evening when he's active, so we just make sure he goes out 2-3 times between 9 and bedtime. If I know he drank too much I will wake him up to take him out in the middle of the night, but only once. If HE wakes up and need to go he will BOLT downstairs and ring his bell. Truly it sounds like she is drinking too much and then can't hold it. She wakes up and is like "Uh oh" The vet said 1-1.5 oz per pound of body weight is what they should be drinking per day. Measure her water for a day and see if she is drinking a lot. If she is, then you need to find out why. (Don't limit it until you find out why.)

| How often does she go out during the day? Some people say their dogs only go out 3-4 times. Loki goes out every 30-60 mins unless he's sleeping. Every dog is different but it helps to know. And are you crate training?

| I agree with the previous post. My two aren't housetrained yet, but we are crate training and they both hold it all night, they are almost 5 months and 9 weeks. I don't leave food or water down for them all the time. food is at mealtimes and I'll put the water down through out the day. If they don't drink, and/or walk away from it, I'll put it back up. They don't get fed after 6:00 in the evening. Because my 5 month old can go up to 5 hours before pooping and I have to go to bed. If he doesn't poop before bed, he almost always will poop in his crate over night. They've never peed though. I don't let them drink for about 1 to 2 hours before bed. Then they are taken out quite a bit before actual bed time. If you are restricting water intake near bed time, I would probably go see a vet about it. Just because of her surgery when she was younger. HTH,

| Thanks SO much Erin and Melanie Tink sleeps in her crate at night. I bought her a really small when I got her at 11 weeks old and she has been sleeping in that one until recently, I just bought her a bigger one so she has a little more room and since the bedwetting wasn't getting any better. I actually tried having her sleep on my bed hoping that maybe if I caught her moving I'd catch her before she pee'd but that only lasted a couple of days because she wet and I didn't even feel her move, so I put her back in the crate for the night, it's sounds like she might have nightime incontinence like little Loki. I do the water limit letting her have her last drink around 8:30 at night and let her out one last time around midnight. I didn't know about the amount they should drink though...that's a great tip During the day she has to go out every 1 or 2 hours at the very most or she'll pee and go sit in her doggy bed and looks guilty...LOL So I know she doesn't want to pee on the floor. Erin, what kind of tests will the vet run to find out if she has incontinence problems? I really need to get this problem fixed for her because poor little thing is either diapered up at night or gets bathed daily...LOL Thanks again we really appreciate your help! Rita and Tink |

| We were concerned about the 4am baths so I understand! OK, Loki had done this 4 or 5 times over the course of a month or two long after he was fully housetrained and crate trained. At first we were puzzled and thought he was peeing and then lying in it, but then we figured out the blanket wasn't even wet (he was curled in a ball and his fur got it, it wasn't much). Then we thought maybe he was licking himself or something, but finally he was napping one day and my husband and I were watching tv. Loki didn't move a muscle and we noticed all of the sudden he was wet. So we knew he was peeing in his sleep. So off to the vet... The vet ran a test for a UTI, which we had to rule out although no he'd had no accidents when he was awake. It wasn't a UTI so she prescribed a drug called PPA. She said it's a very safe drug for dogs and they can be on it their whole lives if they need to be. She said some can be weaned off though. I give him a quarter of a pill with his dinner every day (It is meat flavored, so I just throw it on his kibble. He eats it first.) Anyway this has taken care of it. If it didn't I was supposed to give him a pill twice a day. We are still careful with water around bedtime. If he wants water late at night we just make sure he is "empty" and make him go out a few times before bed. Now, the vet also said incontinence is VERY VERY rare in male dogs. But Loki is unique in many ways. Anyway, she said it is quite common in females. So, if that's what you're dealing with, I have to say the treatment and outcome for us has fine. It's cheap too, in case you were wondering.

| I asked because I was wondering if she was quite small. I remember when my Tink was 3-4 pounds, she seemed to go every 1/2 hour. But She is 5 1/2pounds now too and only goes out a few times a day now to potty and holds it all night. Maybe a trip to the doc would be beneficial. If you don't mind me asking, where did you purchase her? |
