| Housetraining Question I have been reading several threads on housetraining but none have answered my question. Here it is: why does my 11 month old poop at night? Let me explain what I mean. During the day he is great about not have any "accidents" in the house because I walk him like 3 times a day, sometimes more. I am so proud of him because when he was younger he would have alot of "accidents" inside. His final walk is around 7 pm. He usually poops and I never give him anymore food. Then in the morning I always find poop on the wee pad. I don't understand. How could this be if he hasn't eaten anything all night? |

| There is what is called a "bowel transit time." This is the amount of time it takes food to travel through our digestive system. And, with people (and animals), this can vary a great deal. This can vary from a few hours to the better part of a day or more. Bowel transit time is dependent on diet and varies greatly from person to person. For example, people who eat a high-fiber diet (large quantities of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains) tend to have rapid transit times and bulky stools. Lower fiber diets move less quickly. Many other things also effect the movement of food through our digestive tracts. Working in x-ray for many years, I have seen hundreds of films and many fluoroscopy studys showing the movement of barium that people drank for the test. It is normal for some people to go to the bathroom three times a day and normal for other people to go three times a week. I would expect there to be the same variance in animals depending on their diets, their systems, and other factors. I'm sure my doctors would say - don't worry about it. As your pup gets older, he may become more regular and eventually go only once a day -- or he may not. Don't worry! ***** I'm just glad that my pup has outgrown the stage where he went a dozen times a day. Carol Jean |

| Can you try feeding 1/2 of the meal twice a day? Loki eats breakfast and dinner. Give them maybe 8 hours apart and then move them forward or back based on what happens. Like, maybe if he's eating in the morning now, and you start to feed him at night, he will not have to poop until the next morning Try rotating until it works. Also, how old is he, and how big? 1 cup sounds like an awful lot. I feed Loki about the same amount of Canidae as when he was on NB, and it's about 1/2 cup a day. And he is almost 10 pounds. Maybe if you are feeding him too much, he has to poop a lot. Also, Loki used to poop 3-4 times a day until he was about 6 months old, then 3 times a day until he was about 8 months old. Now it's twice a day for sure. Free feeding makes it hard to predict when your dog will need to poop. If he's pooping on his last walk of the day, then again at night, then you probably need to adjust when and how much you feed him. I hope this helps!

| My pups go out for the last time about 9pm. I get up about 3am every morn to let all pups out and I notice that the two little ones always go poop. Just seems to be their time to go. Thank goodness I'm a lite sleeper.

| Thanks for the information SnowWa and Erin. It was very informative. Bachee is 12 months now and weighs 8 pounds. I noticed whenever I would feed him 1 cup of NB he would never finish it so I reduced it to 1/2 cup a day. Now he finishes it all up. I will try to feed him like 1/4 cup in the morning and 1/4 at night. Hopefully that will stop the nighttime pooping. Last edited by yorkiesrock; 05-17-2006 at 01:48 PM. |

| Can you walk him one final time right before you head to bed? That might help him through the night. |

| My pup's "nighttime pooping" really isn't during the night. He wakes when the first glimmer of sunlight appears - 5 or 6 in the morning - before I am awake and goes then. So it really is "early morning." And, this is when a lot of dogs go to the bathroom. Good luck! Carol Jean |

| Tyson is good about sleeping through the night with no accidents-but he is repelled by the wee wee pad-when it comes to pooping on it. How did you get your pups to poop on the pads? |

| Its just gotten to be a habit to get up about 3am as my Cairn and Westie trained me well. I don't walk them I just let them out the back door into their puppy yard. I do go out into the yard with the little ones to make sure they do their thing, then back to bed till 6am when we all rise.
