| Pooping in tiny crate!!! Hello, I have a 15 month old yorkie boy, Mojo. His potty training was taking a turn for the worst, so I began crate training about a weak ago. The first couple of days were going great, but after reading many of the YT threads I realized my crate was too big. I put several shoe boxes in the back and cut the size in half. After about a day he went poop in the crate when I put him in for only 20 minutes! The next day he did the same thing after only about 30 minutes in the crate. I made the crate space even smaller to where he barely has room to stand and lay, but today he pooped in the crate AGAIN after being in for only about 20 minutes! I am at a loss and don't understand what's going on. The crate space can't get any smaller without seriously cramping him. Furthermore, the three times he's pooped in the crate, he was only in a very short time, so it doesn't seem to be an issue with him not being able to hold it long enough. Is this some type of rebellion? Or perhaps a behavioral problem (b/c I thought dog's don't want to poop where they sleep??) Help!!! |

| Hi, and Welcome to YT! Your pup is not rebelling, and I doubt if he has a behavioral problem, though only the experts would know for sure. I know when my girls are going to poop. They almost always poop first thing in the morning, either before or directly after breakfast. Then sometimes they will go in the middle of the afternoon around 2pm. They don't always go at night, hence the first thing in the morning poo. If I take them out at their regular time, and they do not poo, then I put a leash on them and keep them with me because I know if they wander off, I am going to clean up a pile somewhere in the house. I think you need to keep a little chart of what time your pup is pooing for about a week, and then make sure you have him OUTSIDE at that time. Try it! I hope it works for you!

| Well it seems you just started crate training so give him a few days. He's definitely old enough to hold it as long as he needs too. Make sure you are cleaning the crate good after he does it so there are no traces of the smell.

| Sorry for the mistake - Mojo is only 15 WEEKS old, not 15 months! I'll try making sure that he's gone poop before putting him in the crate. Although, one of the times he did it was after playing outside for about a half hour?!

| If you don't suspect a physical ailment behind the behaviour then... It's not enough to just crate him. You have to make sure he goes to the bathroom (both if you feel he should have to do both) and THEN put him in the crate. Get a feel for how often he needs to go and take him out at those times. No food and no water should be in the crate w/ him. Those are only given at supervised times and then he must go outside before and actually "go" before you put him back in his crate. Other than that, it sounds like you're on the right track. Now, if he's going right after he's already gone outside, that's a different matter. PM me if that's the case. ~Leslie |

| Pooping in the small crate is a mess! I have a seven month old yorkie who is perfectly trained during the day and night but when it comes to being crated when we leave, she poops in the crate! She pounds the poop into bits and pieces and then it's all over everything. I come home to a big mess, clean the crate and then give her a bath! I think it has to do with separation anxiety...does anyone else have this problem? She does spend a lot of time with us out and about and at home. I have to break her of this habit....I think I will have to leaver her more often in the small crate during the day! Any advice would be helpful.... |
