Maybe if you just use a belly band for a couple weeks. . . Hoping that after enough time passes he forgets that he likes to mark other people and things, lol.

I feel your pain! Tucker used to pee on every dog he met! He is a terrible marker, still does it all over the house. I usually just yell his name when he does it and he stops. (he is not used to be yelled at so it always makes him stop dead and look at me). I wish I had advice for you. I'm just impressed that you can take him off leash. Tucker would be G-O-N-E!

LOL...those stories are FUNNY!! Zoe marks trees and poles but squats at home. I'm scared his rebellious days are coming. I hope he picks posessions of hots guys to mark!

Actually, I have some other advice besides belly bands.
I was using belly bands on Wookie, and all they did was make it "ok" for him to pee whenever/whereever he wanted. It got so bad that he was wearing them 24/7 literally. He used to mark everything and anything allllll the time. So here are my thoughts.. don't get him used to those.

What I do now is.. besides watch him like a hawk.. when he does try to mark, I make a huuuuge fuss about it. Not just me, but whoever is in the room. Just act like it's a huge deal, and it was very very wrong. It has worked like magic on Wookie!

Thanks Dena! I have wondered about making a huge fuss about him marking.......and I can understand doing it indoors but Sully never marks inside. I don't want to un-teach him that it's OK to pee outside? What do you think? Will he know the difference between me fussing when it's ok to go peepee but not marking outdoors? I mean, besides surfers' towels and 2yr old boy's ankles, that is.

Yeah, he definitely knows.
I talked to my trainer the other day about it. And to dogs, marking is completely different that peeing to them.
Especially if it's on a person or a towel. They definitely know the difference between marking and peeing. I went from wookie marking 25 times a day... to trying to mark once a week.

You just have to make sure to follow through. Make a huge fuss, and then put him in a place where he is allowed to pee, then praise him for peeing in the right place right away. It's been a miracle saver to me.

Sometimes - it's only new and different situations or environments that cause this behavior.

The first time Kerry, my soon-to-be son in law, brought his dog over to meet me, it came into my house, promptly lifted its leg, and pee'd on my new sofa. Can you imaging how Kerry felt. He almost died ( ...and, of course, he bopped his dog a good one on the head and told him he was bad bad bad - and took him outside -- and scolded him further - like guys do - this is a big dog). BUT - this same dog has visited me a hundred times since then - and I have babysat him many times for several days, and he has never repeated this behavior again. (I guess it was a one-time, visit-to-a-new house thing. (Should mention also that I had two cats and two dogs - that no doubt Kerry's dog smelled the minute he entered my house.)

So - perhaps for your pup - just visiting a new place (with tons of water around) is causing part of it.

I would think that if he's disciplined every time he does it - he'll stop.

Maybe, it's your hubby thats teaching him to pee pee on hot surfer dudes towel. He's just helping his daddy out. hahaha. Sorry I have no advice.
