For those of you who's yorkies are pee pad trained... Esme does great on the pee pads at home. I take her to my moms house every Saturday. My mom has two Pomeranians who are also pee pad trained. I set Esme's pad next to theirs and I walk her over there and have her do her business on the pad. Now, the problem is that she still insists on peeing on my moms area rug in under the dining room table. I don't know why she does this??? We have some area rugs at home, so I don't think it's because she hasn't experienced a rug before. Each time she does her thing there we clean it with Nature's Miracle, so I don't think it's the smell that makes her keep going there. My mom thinks Esme is the cutest, so she doesn't get upset. But, I am wondering, will she ever be potty trained in my mom's house too?? When dogs are completely pee pad trained, does that mean they will ONLY go on the pads wherever they are? Or will she only go on the pads, at home? I am really curious about this. Mari |
I can only say from my experiences thus far with Baby that she will only use the pee pads at home. I've taken her other places and she acts like it's her first day on the job and she can pee where ever she pleases! We just take her outside whenever we go to someone else's house! Good Luck! |
i have to agree with ya.... toby does good at home, and then he pees all over the place at my moms house, unfortunatly she is not as kind as your mom :( |
I found that it was harder to train my Yorkie to use a pad at my in-laws home, but she just started being consistent the last two visits. Until then she would go sometimes on her pad, but she would also go right beside her pad or use the door mat. I'm lucky enough to mahe a mom-in-law like Mari's mom, she didn't seem to mind, (she calls our dogs her grandpuppies :) ) but my father-in-law was not pleased to say the least. It took a good 10-15 visits to get her trained at their house, so don't give up hope. :) |
Our yorkie is litter-boxed trained and when we take him on vacation we just bring his litter box. Admittedly, it is not as easy as a piddle pad, but he doesnt seem to have a problem using it regardless of where we are. :aimeeyork |
parlor pants When I take my Yorkies to visit anyone, they wear belly bands(boys) and parlor panites(girls)..it is too stressful for me to watch them every second.. some people have very expensive carpets and wood floors. The older I get the more I look for ways to make life easy and this works for me. |
Me too. Bands and panties work great for hotels too. |
House training?? I have only had Reese for a week and a half (she is 10 weeks old) and I am trying to train her on the pads. Does anyone have any suggestions about how I should start this process. I thought she was doing ok at first but then we went away last weekend and she seemed to not even notice the pads were there. |
Puppy Pads Pinkerton likes to pee pee on the pads.. he knows a treat is coming his way and a "GOOD BOY" and when i am not in the room where his pad is .. he brings it to me to show me.. what he did... he is too silly.. :D |
Hi! I am taking our girls with us on vacation in July. My parents aren't used to indoor dogs and now I am a bit concerned about the puppies remembering to use the pads or waiting until they go outside. Where would I find these parlor panties for the them? Thanks! |
Not so with Lily Belle Hi! Just wanted to add that while I think Parlor Panties are a great idea, my Lily knows where to tinkle in most locations. I simply bring the pad, sprayed lightly with the "training mist", and put it in a location that she can see..... preferably somewhere that everyone else is goin got be near, too.... If she has to leave the room to pee, or leave "where the action is" to find her pad somewhere, I don't think she would respond half as well. Just a thought! :) |
It took a while for Oreo and Ginger to be potty trained at two different houses (i take them to my house and my boyfriends house) .. so it was quite a chore. They were fully potty/poopy trained at my house, but when i started bringing them to my boyfriends house that was a different story. I bought this spray and would just spray in on the peepee pads.. and they would go on there.. they use to pee/poop everywhere (well still do once in a while, still working on it).. but i use that spray on their pads and they go on the pad, but when i forget to put it, they'll sometimes know to pee on it, but they will poop somewhere else! but that spray is kind of smelly! :) but it does work! |
Hi, What kind of spray is that? One of my pups uses the pad and the other prefers the middle of the kitchen floor. He does go to the kitchen on the tile floor, I did get him taught that! Thanks, Whitney |
hello where do you get the belly band/panty things?? charlie is not the greatest at potty training... he is a year old and still marks in between going outside... it is very frustrating... but i agree that he is worse when going to other people's homes... |
The spray i don't remember the name, i just bought it from Target, and i had ran out and my boyfriend threw the bottle away... and we bought another one today, but it's liquid and you put a few drops on the pad.. it's called Four Paws Puppy housebreaking aid. (i got it at petco) i hope this helps! |
I guess I should feel lucky since Schatzie has gone on her pee pee pads outside of our home in other areas. Hotel, friends, our RV, she always has done fine. I never really gave it much thought about it until reading this thread... I wish I could offer advise for some training techniques but i don't have any... I just laid the pads down wherever we were and she'd just go. ??? Good luck.. |
I just bought the Four Paws drops as well. It has not worked yet but it has only been three days? I will give it more time. I am also thinking about littler box training her. Does anyone have any thoughts about that? |
I haven't seen this suggestion with the pads. I have read alot about pad training and one site I was on suggested that you use a cage over the pee pad. I found a playpen that turns into five different uses. I don't have my puppy yet but I am going to put it in a rectangle cage ( no top) and just sit her in there every time I want her to go. You just set the cage on top of the pee pad. It also has a door so when they start to go to it you can open the door. Just a thought. :) |
Stewie goes on the pee pad everywhere but my boyfriend's parents' house. They get kind of pissed when he goes on the carpet, but you know what... Their carpet is from 1970 and is disgusting orange shag, so I DON'T CARE! Well, I guess I do care, but I don't like the way they won't just tell me that he went on the carpet, they have to talk about it in a patronizing way. Ok, done venting. He also goes on newspaper if there is no pee pad available to him. He just knows that feeling under his feet I guess |

Litter box training Quote:
It has really been easy. We buy litter boxes especially designed for dogs (at petsmart). The larger, deeper ones are great if you have a male, as they like to hike their legs and the dog boxes are deep enough to allow them to do it. We don't use the dog litter as they would always try to eat it. Instead we just use regular "clumping" cat litter. The trick to training them is to keep the box clean. Our schedule is as follows: First thing in the morning, put them in the box and don't let them out until they potty, which never takes too long since they've been holding it all night. We praise them as they are doing their business and then let them out to eat. After they eat, they usually have to go do #2. When we see them sniffing around and doing the 'circle dance' we put them in the box again. After they do both #1 and #2, we scoop the waste out of the litter box and head out for work. During the day, we use baby gates to keep them confined to the kitchen and they have free range of it until we are home. As soon as we come home we clean out the litterbox again. Keeping it clean, will keep them using it. I was home with Elvis during his litterbox training, so I was able to keep a close eye on him. Whenever he awoke form a nap or ate a bunch, I'd just put him in the litterbox. It's the cutest thing when you see them head off on their own to the litterbox for the first time :D At first, they'll forget alot, as they do with any type of house training (they're just little ones after all), but they start to pick it up after a bit. It usually takes about 5 months for them to be trained completely, but then no more worries about keeping them caged up or letting them outside in the winter time or getting up early to let them outside. We keep a litterbox in the laundry room and the master bedroom bath. They sleep in our bed and have NEVER had an accident in it. When they need to go, they just hop off the bed and go to the litter box, then climb back up into bed with us. It's so nice not to have to worry about them holding it all day. Good luck with your baby and let me know if their is anything else I can do. :) |

Litter Box Training The litter we use is called Swheat Scoop. It is made from crushed wheat, not clay. It just seems cleaner and healthier for our dogs. The clay stuff used to get encrusted around their tiny paws. We just put it in a litter box designed for dogs and it works like a charm. Our friends always think it is the funniest thing to see our dogs running into the laundry room to use the litter box :D |
I find that haveing only a sm. area where my yorkie is able to run is best. She has very little accidents. I take her out when the where is nice. She is 4 months old now and doing well. |

This is far fetched, but maybe he likes the softness of the rug? |
Bella is pee pad trained for nights. She was using pads when I got her and I just continued to watch her and reinforce her using them. Now she goes outside during the day,and uses pads at night (she doesn't usually need to). Training her to go out was more work. I constantly watched her, and took her out at ANY sign of needing to go. I repeated "Bella go potty" over and over until she went, then I praised her and gave her a treat. You could to the same with the pad training. |
I feel very fortunate. Abbey has no problem using her pee pads anywhere. We have visited several friends homes, hotels, etc and we always put the pads down as soon as we get there and show her where they are. We usually put down 2. One in the bedroom where we are staying and the other in the living room or family room or hallway. Somewhere she can get to quickly when we are in other parts of the house. We use the Jump Start pads by Simple solution. They seem to be more expensive than others, and I am hoping when she is a little older and 1000% perfect, I can use the less expensive pads. I also put her on the pad when we first arrive. Sometimes she goes and sometimes she doesn't, but I feel like I have given her the opportunity to "be a good girl". Whenever she uses the pads, everyone applauds and praises and praises like crazy. As far as going on the rug, have you removed the odor from prior pee episodes? If the odor is still there, she may think that is a good place to go. I swear by Simple Solution. It removes the stain and the odor very well. Good luck! Ellie |
I never really gave that issue much thought, I always thought once they are trained to go potty on the pads, they'll stick to them no matter where they go? That seems the case with Pepper, he goes on pads at home and whenever I take him to work, also we took a road trip a couple weeks ago and stayed at a hotel, no accidents there either. He's 5 months, the only problem is pottying on pad is so rooted in his memory now, he won't even try to go outside, even if he's out of the house (and away from the pad) for hours at a time (I think 7 or so the longest  )... |
