| Training and caring for a Rescue Hi everyone. I recently rescued an 11 month old male yorkie, Walter, from a neglectful owner. He had never been to the vet, so up until a couple of days ago, he had never had any vaccinations, he has not yet been fixed, and he was covered in fleas. He is underweight at 4lbs, and the vet has said he needs to gain another 4 lbs. I could use some help, as I have never had a yorkie before, much less a rescue yorkie. There are several pressing issues that I need some help with. In general, Walter is very sweet and calm, but he is terrified of men and barks at and tries to attack my brother. He's slowly gotten better around him, but its like W forgets who my brother is every time he sees him. He gets along well with my small mutt, Bruno, but he is aggressive towards my large labrador, Al. Al is very sweet, and has not shown any signs of aggression towards him. In fact, Al usually just ignores him, but he barks, lunges, and nips at Al whenever he sees him. How can I stop this aggressive behavior, especially towards the big dog? I am crate training him. This method worked very well previously with Bruno. I got him from very similar circumstances. Bruno also was not potty trained at , and crate training worked like a charm. I am having a bit more difficulty with him though. He is definitely more stubborn, and he has much worse separation anxiety. This leads me to my next point... In two days, he has already become very attached to me. He follows me wherever I go, constantly tries to get in my lap, or wants me to hold him, and has panic attacks whenever I leave him for the smallest amount of time. In the car, the small dogs have a dog car seat to keep them secure during the ride. He will whine and cry unless he's in my lap, which I don't allow, for obvious reasons. I am worried about his dependency on me, for even though I will try, I can not always be the only person to care for him. I might need a family member or friend to watch after him, and it's just not good for him to be so attached. How can a combat this attachment and anxiety but still form a healthy relationship with him? |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | In the stickie section the first part of this forum there is an article called rehabbing a rescue dog. It might have suggestions useful for you. My razzle can be aggressive towards my big ones, and if he is it is usually he is resource guarding me . If on my lap stern no and down to the floor he goes. In bed he is again set down. My big ones have never disciplined him once! They don't consider him a threat which he is not to them. Separation anxiety. I would have my bro walk one big dog and you the wee one, and switch off halfway through. This starts your dog feeling as if he is part of the pack and in time will look more to them for company. You may already know some of this stuff but desensitization takes time. Don't make big deal out of Leaving, or coming home, or having a bath shower.
