| Male or Female yorkie? I am interested in getting a yorkie but I'm not sure which gender would be best for me. I was going to get a girl so that I can dress her up and love on her but a lot of articles claim female yorkies bond better with men and aren't as affectionate as male yorkies. I also keep hearing that yorkies are very hard to train, is this true? Can you give me your advice and share with me your own personal experiences with the two gender types. |

| It is probably like human boys n girls- there are stereotypes but often it's nature/nurture. I absolutely adore both of my yorkies. In my case, our girl is obsessed with my husband n I but my boy Yorkie loves all six of us equally (maybe me as his mommy slightly more lol). My girl doesn't have as much patience for my children as my boy Yorkie. My boy is more even tempered but he also came from two rigair show champs and is finely bred whereas my girl I think was from more of a backyard breeder (hindsight is 20/20). So is it personality? Breeding? Not sure. I guess my point is, I don't know but I just am so in love with both for different reasons! |

Senior Yorkie Talker | I love both my girl and boy yorkie to pieces! My girl is more laid back with the sweetest little soul/demeanor.... She was fully potty trained in a few weeks flat.... Not one accident EVER ASIDE FROM ONCE right after her shots.... She had a very bad reaction. My boy is an attention hog 24/7 he's a little fire cracker... Our yorkie in a pit bulls body! Our little watch dog... Our Alpha dog! Potty training still a challenge, no cuddling but wants to be close, every where every second of the day... He will lick you death!!! My girl is just chill |

| Oh and on the training- they have both been a joy to train- Ella isn't as social w strangers, so that was my only real challenge but she's super street smart n eager. Hudson is just very friendly n eager to please. I love yorkies- either gender, just look for temperament more then anything I think! |

| I had a pack of 3 females, all 3 years apart, they were sweet loving girls, never a growl between them, all very affectionate, loved to cuddle, all diff. personalities. My family were mainly all women, just a few men in the family, my girls took to women better then men, I THINK because men had deeper voices lol, just a guess. I now have a single fur baby, a male rescue, I see no diff. in the love, attention dept. he is a cuddlier also. He was raised by a very young child, an 8 yo girl, so he LOVES children and he was around more men then my girls were, so he is better with men then the girls were. He is my very first male dog I have ever had. He would be in Ripley's "Believe it or NOT" for being the PERFECT boy if he was dog friendly, but he's MY PERFECT boy. I honestly see NO diff. between him and my now passed girls.

| My male is a lot more aggressive than the little girl I had. Minnie was more a family dog. Dexter is strictly lovable to his mom and dad

| Boy! All the way. I have a cuddly mama's boy that loves me as much as I love him. He likes a few others, but he truly only loves me. That sounds selfish, but it's true. He wasn't hard to train once I found what motivates him the most, food. He'll do anything for a bit of tomato, lettuce, apple, or chicken.

| Girl. Hands. Down. I will add that I have an alpha male as a husband, and our male cat in California and him fought so much that the cat turned vicious. I didn't want that for my dog so I chose a girl deliberately. She ended up being an alpha personality, but as a puppy GIRL he's helping raise hubby's been more laid back. Yorkies will take the reins if you don't. Girls are generally more laid back. I'd advise a girl over a boy for sure. Chews alpha or not, is gentle, sweet, and laid back. |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I much prefer girls . . I love to dress them up I also love making clothes for them. I have had three females and one male at in my home and have had issues with intact females fighting. It's a common incident with any intact males or females so that is something that you will need to consider if you have other animals in the home. As far as training I've had it go well and others not so well but for the most part my four were very easy to train including potty training. The worse of the bunch was fully potty trained by the age of 1. I guess it would depend on the type of training you use. Our doors vs. puppy pads, do you have to walk them or do you have a dog run/yard. We did paper training and we also have a dog run both worked great. It's more a matter of consistency . . . you and anyone else in the home must be consistent with training all types not just potty training. I have found that my girls were and are more lovey affectionate that my male.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I am more a boys momma. I like a more independent dog that is still loving but not demanding of affection 24/7. Some gals are like that but boys in my experience tend to be a bit more so.

It's also true that Yorkies can be hard to train. The key is to do a lot of research and read up on training techniques ahead of time so you're prepared when your puppy arrives home. Note that even after you feel you've learned it all, you'll still need to learn by trial and error because each dog is different and there is no one method that works. If you do your research, apply consistent training several times a day, make sure you keep cool when things get frustrating, and just have fun...then Yorkies can be a pleasure to train! My point is, the level of difficulty in training depends more or less to you. It's not easy work. You need to have a ton of patience and more. Especially when you face challenges. You actually need to put a LOT of effort into it and you should want to, not have to. I find it extremely fun to train my dogs and trust me they've been bad. But I still enjoy it. So to me, it's not difficult. To answer your original question on gender, I would suggest that you put all your effort into finding the best breeder you can find. And then whatever puppy they have available, will be the one for you! (i.e. choose breeder over choosing gender) Once you find that perfect breeder, if they happen to have a choice of girl or boy, then meet the puppies in person, and let your feelings guide you. When I say perfect breeder, I mean find a good active show breeder. It's a world of difference. I truly believe show dog breeders produce puppies that are easier to train - purely based on the fact that good breeders only breed dogs that have good temperaments, have been trained their whole lives, and have won competitions. If for even one second you have doubts about a "breeder" possibly being a backyard breeder or a puppy mill, just forget it and move on - no matter how cute the puppy is or hard they're selling the puppy to you or pressuring you in any way. I could go on and on. But you get the gist

| I thought I wanted a girl for a yorkie but now have two boys! I wouldn't change a thing. If I get another yorkie I would want boy again.

YT 500 Club Member | Mine is diffentley a Momma's boy. He is so cuddley, loves kisses, sweet, but also a fire cracker! Goes everywhere I go in the house. If someone picks him up he looks at me with saucer eyes. Would rather sit with me than my husband, and yes, my husband is jealous. Not hard to potty train. All Yorkies can be house trained. Just be consistent. Lots & lots of praise. Be ready to spend a lot of time outside.

| Boys are the best!! A biased opinion from a proud yorkie mama to a wonderful little boy.
