| Persistence, consistence, and patience....may take a year easily....may luck out and come in under a year....requires commitment and dedication to a set schedule, with pee and poo breaks same time each day...usually starting out every 2 hours if you have a small puppy. Good luck..... |

| Re:stubborn reply by yorkiem1 I wouldn't have dreamed it would take so long. Why so long with yorkie's? So most yorkie parents go through this? |

| All my 4 now passed yorkies girls were gotten at 8 weeks old, by time they were 5 months old they were 100% paper trained with NO ACCIDENTS, by 7 months old they were 100% house broken, meaning, they went outside to potty, they were then given free roam of the house. When your pup pees off the pad, take the pad, adsorb the pee, place the pad back where it belongs, pick up the pup, place him on the pad and tell him PEE-PEE ON THE PAD. If he poops off the pad, pick up the poop and place it on the pad, pick up the pup, place him on the pad and tell him POO POO ON THE PAD (or what ever words you use for pee and poop). You must be CONSISTENT, and PATIENT, no screaming, telling, just use a firm voice. This is what worked for me when paper training my puppies.

| Thanks for that info and my condolences for your losses! I am unable to use the potty pads b/c my little guys plays with them and chews them up. I do something similar though. I pick up the pee/poop with a paper towel and take him outside with it and tell him "go potty outside ". |

But dont get discouraged if it takes you up to a year to get this thru to them....it is a battle of wills....some are much more stubborn than others, and they will test YOUR commitment to this "peeing/pooping on a pad" when it is so much easier to "just squat and pee on the floor so I can resume playing without missing a step"! Your baby is not less intelligent because he doesnt take to the training immediately and is completely trained in a rapid, short period of time....some are much more stubborn, that is their characteristic personality! and they will test your strength and determination! Imagine how happy you will be if you are prepared for "the long haul" and your baby acquiesces in a couple of months! I had a dear friend buy a yorkie from me, and everyday, she would come by my office to give me jubliant updates on her baby! Then she began to ask about paper training....she was not having any luck at all....I just kept telling her to stick with it, be every bit as stubborn as she is being....she kept it up, she got discouraged, she got angry, she got disappointed, but she hung with her, never faltering on her persistant, consistant, training....and then one day, when she was 1 year old, that hard headed stubborn "my way or the highway yorkie" decided she had no fight left in her, and she looked at my friend, walked over to her pee pad, held her gaze with my friend, peed, and they both REJOICED! That baby has never peed on the floor again, she goes straight to her pee pad, and she is 11 years old now! My friend has to put more pads down, because she sometimes can not make it from upstairs, down stairs to the pee pad and they dont want her to rush and fall down stairs.... but no big deal! | |

| Thank you all for the encouragement. It is much needed! No doubt, I have a very, very stubborn little guy! But, I will persevere and win the battle of the wills! It can be hard when people who have other breed dogs talk about how quickly their dogs were trained.

| Tell me about it! It's really annoying. Not just with potty training but things like like food too. "Oh I give my dog this and that and he's fine" "I just give my dogs bones and their teeth get cleaned that way Ive never brushed my dogs teeth" etc.. etc.. I don't have just a dog it's a Yorkie! Lol

Scottie was about 100% outdoor potty trained by 1 year as well.
