The Walks from Hell!!! My new puppy, Wilson, is now 5 months old. I took him on from a previous owner and got him as a companion for my 5 year old Yorkie, Mikey. Having lost my 15+ year old Yorkie, Teddy, back in November (to various health issues) I didn't want Mikey to be an only dog when he'd always been part of a pair. When Wilson arrived, Mikey was over the moon! In turn, Wilson adopted Mikey as a parent - sticking to him like glue 24/7 ... But then the problems began; they are hell when walking out together! We've had pairs of male Yorkies for over 40 years without any walkies issues. They are both leashed and begin yelling and scrapping the minute I leave the house. Mikey walks ahead in a straight line while Wilson leaps ahead of him, shoots sideways, before dashing directly in front of my path! If I'm not extra careful, he'll have me over on the ground! He tries to leap at any passing person in the street, tangles himself around Mikey, and has the extra awful habit of attempting to wind himself around my legs. So, OK, they're only Yorkies but, to be honest, they are as strong as oxen and I have difficulty just holding onto them! All throughout the walk they are yelling their heads off at everything and heaven help me if another dog comes along. Mikey on his own is fine ... but when they're a pair ... They usually make straight for the vet's surgery on the way back, and it's even worse if they cannot barge directly through the open door. When inside the vet's, they're still yelling until someone gives them a treat!!! My schedule doesn't allow me to go to puppy training classes so, PLEASE, any suggestions???

When I got my second boy he was 10 months old and completely rogue on the leash. Not as wild as your little one bc he was also very scared of everything. So once he actually acclimated to being outside he did the same thing when walking with my older boy. What worked for me is that I would take them separately. And when I walked alone with the new boy I would keep the leash very tight next to me so he had no choice but to stay close. Obviously I used a harness bc there is a lot of tugging and pulling. Sometimes the walks only lasted 5 mins! But I would assert my authority and once he realized it wasn't going to change he became very good. Once they were able to walk together I always let my older boy have a slight lead over him. And as if a miracle occurred one day they just both got it. It's important to teach the new one how to behave properly on a walk with a leash. It's all new to him so that's prob why he's acting so crazy. New smells and noises and it's very exciting and I'm sure overwhelming. He has to learn to control his excitement. So shorter frequent walks alone without any distraction from the other boy will be a good place to start. Good luck.

Thank you for your help! Yes, it's true, when it's raining I have taken them separately as I cannot handle 2 + an umbrella! On those occasions, I had noticed that Wilson could be handled far more easily. I'll take Mikey out first (as Wilson has already peed and pood indoors by that time) and I'm sure things will work that way!!!

| Great advice from Kerryn915. Although my second Yorkie came to us trained at 8 months, we still had separate walks in addition to team walks to get everyone acclimated. My boys do get out of practice being around people and other dogs, so I try to keep them exposed as much as possible. theMozer, I completely understand what you mean about being pulled down by 2 little dogs, lol. My boys are larger at 9 pounds, but I'm tall and strong and they still can come close to pulling me over when they are excited.

And now for the GOOD news!!! I took Mikey out first and all was fine. Wilson, already groomed and leashed, was taken out on our return. Well ... what an improvement that was!!! He wasn't half as interested to leap at people as he usually is and, when I told him not to disturb the 2 veterinary ladies walking an in-patient husky from the hospital, he left well alone. Even when he met a pair of Westies out in the lane, he did not misbehave. Up in the avenue he actually sat before crossing the road ... and then, lucky puppy, he shot straight into the vet's practice, ahead of someone who had opened the door, and was given the treats he SOoooooooooooooo expects from there!!! No pee or poo in the street (but of course) but one cannot ask too much of this growing lad!!!
