Puppy not sleeping through the night Bentley is 16 weeks old and we've had him for a month now. In that month, my wife and I have had a grand total of one full night sleep and it's beginning to frustrate us. We try to keep Bentley on a schedule as much as possible. He eats first thing in the morning, then water around 10am, and again around 2:30pm. He eats again around 6pm, and then we take his water away around 7pm. We put him in his crate for bed at 11pm, although lately it's been closer to 10:30pm as we're getting pretty tired these days because of the interrupted sleep. When it comes to going to the bathroom, we let him out when he gets up in the morning and before he goes to bed, and he has to go before he comes back in. Throughout the day we let him out when he rings the sleigh bells (regardless of him needing to go), when he starts to show signs of needing to go, when he whimpers, and before and after we crate him. Needless to say, we give him plenty of opportunities to go to the bathroom, and that doesn't count the accidents he has throughout the day. Anyways, Bentley will wake up some time around 2:30am every morning, barking and whining in his crate. My wife will get up with him and let him out, but by this time he's usually peed in his crate. She'll spray the crate down, put a new towel in, and crate him again. He was going back to sleep until about 5am, but now he will resume barking and whining. We've tried ignoring him, shaking coins, giving his crate a tap, etc., but to no avail. I've now resorting to doing something completely horrible and I bring him into the family room and lie down on the couch with him. I know it's bad, but it's the only way we can get Bentley to sleep after he gets up. Anyways, my wife and I are getting really frustrated, not to mention sleep deprived. Any advice?

Could your puppy be getting a little chilly at night? Kiko will wake me up during the night if she gets cold. She's 4 and completely house broken, so I just pick her up and put her in bed with me. Hope you are all able to get a good night's sleep soon.

| Yorkie puppies tend to need to pee a lot. The smaller they are, the more they need to go. They also are unlikely to sleep 6 - 8 hours a night. When Max was a pup, we would go to bed around midnight and I was usually up with him at 5 am when he needed to poop. He is pad trained, which helps a lot, but he wants the poop cleaned up right away. If your puppy only has a towel to sleep on in his crate, this is another reason he may not be sleeping well. When I first had Max, I did not know how much a dog could appreciate a nice, plush bed. (many members here would probably gasp at what I just wrote ). I brought one home and put it on the floor and Max jumped in it like he was in heaven! What does your puppy do in the evening? If he is resting/sleeping, there is a good chance he is going to wake up very early and be ready for action. Work on tiring him out before bed time with brief play sessions throughout the evening. I would also seriously consider using piddle pads in an xpen or a larger divided pen if you don't want to get up in the middle of the night. Regarding the withholding of water -- despite what some trainers may say, you cannot control dog peeing by controlling water intake. Sure, I don't drink a big Starbuck's before getting into rush hour traffic on the freeway. It helps, but I still can't schedule my need to pee. Dogs don't drink just to drink. They drink only when they need it. Water is necessary for healthy kidneys, liver, heart, brain, skin -- all of the vital organs. Dogs who eat a kibble based diet like mine do especially need water to stay adequately hydrated.

My puppy is 12 weeks old and on a schedule. Even though I work I follow the schedule to a t. Today I didn't and regretted it. Like Maximo said you have to wear him out. We run Cerulean for about 30 minutes prior to his "calm down" time. I let him calm down in his crate for 30 minutes and when I get him out he's half sleep and done for the night. I let him sleep on me while I watch tv and put him in his bedtime crate (in my room) around 10:30. The last few nights he has slept through the night which I find amazing considering his age. Using a crate throughout the day also helps him settle when restless or over excited. I'm not a puppy expert but this is what works for me.

Have you heard of the Snuggle Pet Product line? You buy a dog or cat Snuggle Pet, put in the battery operated beating heart and a heat pac if needed, and put it inside the crate with your puppy. Our new fur baby never made a wimpier through the night, although I did get her up once each night to potty. She went right back to sleep 'til morning. You can buy them on Amazon!

Seems like we've found a solution to our problem. We now walk Bentley up to 4 miles a day; 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. The walk to Starbucks is a mile, so my wife and I walk to Starbucks and back with him, and now we don't have an issue with him sleeping at night. He still wakes up between 4:30am and 5:30am, so one of us has to get up and let him out, but that's better than waking up twice a night and having him cry. He still cries a little when we put him back in his crate after he's gone out to pee. He tends to have a ton of energy when he comes out of his crate, so we just wait it out until he calms down
