| Two year old toilet trouble! Hi folks, our wee Alfie will turn 2 in a months, but we have started to have trouble again with him peeing. He was always 99% good with this, with only ever the occasional wee accident in the morning left over from during the night. However in the last few weeks he has started peeing pretty much everywhere, including in the living room, dining room and the conservatory where he sleeps. We take him out for a toilet walk last thing at night but it doesn't work. Even when we leave him in the house for as little as an hour he goes. It's always when he's on his own or one of us is out of the room. We've tried shouting at him and disciplining him, but nothing seems to work. As we are expecting our first baby in just under two months, we're concerned at how Alfie seems to be taking a backwards step. He also goes mental when someone rings the doorbell, but that's a post for another day. Any suggestions?> |

| Is he neutered? Unneutered dogs tend to mark their territory. How often do you take him out to potty? Does he also have a way to alert you when he needs to go? I wouldn't rely on that alone, but it is good to be aware of the signs, or teach him to ring a bell (jingle bells on the door handle, for instance). Dogs usually need to pee early in the morning, right after meals, and after anything exciting like playtime or the doorbell ringing. Plan for potty breaks then. Also, you need to clean up the accident spots with an enzyme cleaner to prevent the scent from attracting him to peeing there again.

| Also, do not shout at him. He won't understand why you are angry, and he will actually be more likely to pee inside and try to hide it. He will think going potty is bad in general, not just in the house. Positive reinforcement training is so much more productive and successful. When he goes potty outside, praise him every single time. You can also give him a food reward, a single piece of kibble. My boys revel in the praise and the kibble reward. Don't ever stop giving praise. When you find an accident spot or catch him in the act, just say, "Uh oh. You need to potty outside."
