Potting at night and grass pads? Hello friends! 2 questions for you. To give a little more info, Maverick is almost 8 months now. First question is how old would you expect these guys to be able to hold their bladder for around this age at night? This little guy goes to sleep at 10, but is up crying to go potty anywhere around 12-2am, and atleast 1 or 2 more times, prior to getting up for the day at about 7am. I'm wondering how much you all would assume is really needing to go potty, vs. just wanting to see what's going on outside. The constant nightly interruptions are not much fun anymore, but I'd still rather take him out, than him have an accident in the crate. Second question, would it be wise to attempt to start training using one of the plastic artificial grass pads also to help avoid accidents in doors, since he still doesn't alert me to go outside, or would that just further confuse him? Thanks in advance! Lori

Well, I'm sure all dogs are different, but my puppy stated sleeping through the night at about 3 1/2 months old. She is 4 months now and sleeps from about 8:30 to 7. I thinks she wakes up a little earlier than that but waits for me to get her out of her crate. As for the grass pads. I debated on trying that with her since it snows a lot here in the winter and I'm not sure how its going to work taking her out to potty, but I feel like she will just be confused right now and probably just try to chew on the fake grass. Maybe someone else on here will have some experience with that.

Yes, he was sleeping through the night until 5am, with an occasional waking up round midnight, but over the last maybe month to 2 months, he's getting worse. Although he's never been a fan of sleeping or being in his crate at all, even with having it as a tiny pup, and being given treats on fun things in it. Just seems like that pattern is getting worse which leads me to believe its more of a wanting to go sniff for rabbits than really needing to potty (though he does potty anyway). I did put the grass down to see his reaction, and you sure nailed it, all he wanted to do was chew it

Also, have you tried using a bell to let you know he needs to potty. Lexi was going to the door when she needed to go but if I didn't see her at the door in time she would just go on the floor. I bought some string and a bell from a hobby store and hang it from the door knob. When I would take her out to potty i would say "let's go potty" and hit the bell. After a couple days of doing this she started doing it. No accident since then (knock on wood).

I did it for a few days when he was younger and I got so busy we just quit. But thanks for the reminder, I will definitely pick that up again! It's even on my door still, I just gotten so used to the sound, it serves me more as a windchime
