Default Potting at night and grass pads?

Hello friends! 2 questions for you. To give a little more info, Maverick is almost 8 months now.
First question is how old would you expect these guys to be able to hold their bladder for around this age at night? This little guy goes to sleep at 10, but is up crying to go potty anywhere around 12-2am, and atleast 1 or 2 more times, prior to getting up for the day at about 7am. I'm wondering how much you all would assume is really needing to go potty, vs. just wanting to see what's going on outside. The constant nightly interruptions are not much fun anymore, but I'd still rather take him out, than him have an accident in the crate.
Second question, would it be wise to attempt to start training using one of the plastic artificial grass pads also to help avoid accidents in doors, since he still doesn't alert me to go outside, or would that just further confuse him?
Thanks in advance!
Lori
