| Wee Pad Best Practices??? I'm so happy to have a 12 week old male Yorkie as an addition to my family. I will say I am a first time yorkie owner and I did get my puppy at 8 weeks and I must emphasize how correct everyone is with recommending 12 weeks as I had a couple blood sugar scares in the beginning....live and learn right? With that said I have been trying to work on his wee wee pad training for over a month and he still seems to not get the point. I praise and clap and give him treats when he does it correctly and when he doesn't and I'm able to catch him in the act I tell him sternly "NO" and then bring him to the pad and say "pee pee here". Does anyone have any best practices or am I just expecting too much from my little man? |

| To be sure, are you placing the pads in the same area? If so, how far away from your designated area is he going when he does it in the wrong place? You're doing well in praising him when he uses the right area and treats can be good reinforcement too. Perhaps add an extra reward like play time or less confinement from your home for a given amount of time. I am in the habit of not saying "no" when you catch them in the act but rather just fixing his choice by placing him on the pad. -Just because I don't want to add anxiety that the dog could possibly link to going poop or pee. -These are just my .02 in an attempt to help. I'm not an expert and I'm a newbie to this forum. Good luck! I hope to see pics of your pup! |

| As this is a common problem for some new yorkie owners. I would love for another more knowledgeable member to chime in and assist. I hope you get the help that is necessary. As one thing I do know is patience is important but consistancy is key. Possibly these sugvestions may help. Time eating schedule perfect. Takr pup withing 20min to potty no off pad until done. Bring treats & use go potty command. Praise and treats when done. If not ready. Crate until its time again. If middle of night is problem. No water after 7. Your enthusiastic voice always helps. When mess up happens. No negative or stressful situation or behavior added on your behalf. They are young and may easily be confused as to what your teaching them. Good luck. Hopefully this will help and we can get you some great advice. Do not give up. !
