| Grooming tips My Xena is a year old now. She is my wild pup. She is always full of energy and not afraid of anything. When she was much younger I had trouble keeping her still for grooming. I found in order to keep her still long enough to brush her I had to sit in the middle of her room and brush her in my lap while she chews on a raw hide straw. The problem with this method is that I can't really get to the hair under her stomach and she does not like me brushing the hair on her head, which so happens to be the part that tangles the worst. Once I get to the head she's done she wants to get up. I''ve tried moving her to a table top to try grooming her standing but I have found that in order to keep her from running off the table I have to hold the raw hide straw in one hand while brushing her with the other. I try to brush her about 3 times a week. I want it to become a daily thing. Do you have any tips on how I can get her to actually stand while i brush her and allow me to brush the hairs on her head? Do any of you have ideas on how i can make daily grooming a more calming experience for her? |

| 1st off, I would stop using rawhide. If they happen to swallow a chunk, it can cause a blockage. Does she get tangles? Most of the time, the pup hates being brushed bc of the pulling of the tangle. So they end up associating brushing time as ouch time. What you can do is line brush. Lift up a section of hair & brush downwards in layers. Brushing this way makes sure you're getting every strand smoothed out. You will be able to see tangles too. You can either try to work it out (if she'll let you), spray a conditioning or detangling spray right on it or snip it off w/blunt nosed scissors (if she doesn't let you). You can also snip into it w/out cutting the whole thing off & help loosen it & brush it out. Make sure you're using a good pin brush w/out the balls @ the end. You'll need to undo her top knot, brush it out & redo her top knot everyday to avoid tangles there. As for underbelly, armpits, inner thighs, those are called high rubbing areas & are very sensitive for them. It's usually shaved off during grooming. You can also use blunt nosed scissors to trim those areas. I get my guys to lie down on my bed & when they're relaxed, I trim those hairs off. It's esp helpful in colder months when they're wearing clothing, bc they will tangle there.

| I put a towel on the table and brush Lola there. To keep her occupied I give her cookies from the loose bar at petco (animal crackers for brushing and teddy grams for her top knot). They aren't the best for her, but they're the best I've found so far, the better dog cookies are too thick and she wants to run under the table with it. To brush her belly I stand her on her hind legs against me. She used to be a nightmare to brush but she's gotten much better now that I put her on the table and give her dog cookies. She'll even sit by the table and wait for me to pick her up while I'm getting her grooming stuff out. |
