Even bigger potty training issue?

I think all dogs like people respond differently. Jess did not understand when I took the praise only method. She just kept on with the behavior even though I tried it for quite awhile (plus she was older)She only made the connection when my tone got low and louder. Now she isnt afraid of me but she knows when I'm not happy. Her ears will go down and she sits down. She also gets tons of love and praise from my 4 daughters, my husband and me, so much so we wear her out! She occasionally still has her moments but its when we go out of the house.
I will say that she did the same as your pup about picking her up. What I did do was stand next to her, crouch down and say "up" and pick her up. We also did this when we were putiing her down. We would say "down" and put her down gently. Over and over. Eventually knew to expect it and she is no longer afraid of being picked up or gets the "wiggle worms" as I call it which scared me that one of the girls was going to drop her. We no longer have to say it.

Yeah that's the one place she goes to when she potties and I say no potty or when we are outside of my room and walking back to my room if I'm behind her she sprints to her bed as if she's afraid but if I'm in front of her she will walk more calmly
