Default Potty Training Schedule

When you put your furbabies to be at night, do you wake them up before you go to sleep yourself for one more potty run? I ask because Jasper keeps peeing in his kennel during the night. If he barks I take him to his pad and he will pee. We bought a smaller kennel because I read several threads about the size being important. I'm frustrated. Bless his heart.....hes so darn cute, I can't get mad at him. But every morning he has peed on his blanket. Suggestions/advice/constructive criticism are all welcome. Thanks!

Yes, definitely and if you have to during the middle of the night too !

I alway took my pups out one last time before I went to bed especially and that young age. Usually around 12-1 am they didn't like it but it is necessary and they would still wake up and need to go. Also I take up the food and water at 8pm every night. Even now, because they will get up to drink in the middle of the night and have accident when we are all fast asleep. Cage training is a great tool for potty training. I've added my methods to my web site below.... you may be able to find some usefull information.

I'm in the same boat..it's frustrating. Bella doesn't bark when she has to go & sometimes when I get up to take her to go, she's already went. I'm really frustrated now because all of a sudden she's not peeing on the pad but on her bed! I don't get this...I thought that they don't pee where they sleep. So I've made the crate smaller, but still she pees on her bed! I need some advice too... Going nuts

Default Potty Training

My yorkie is 6 months old. I always take her out to potty before bed time. She sleeps in a crate and she still pees in her crate. Everyone says they won't pee where they sleep but I haven't found this to be true. Any suggestions?

Mine did the same thing. I tried the smaller crate, she peed the bed and then used a larger crate where she sometimes peed the bed, sometimes the pad. I was like you wondering why they would pee their bed? I think some just do. As she matured we made it very clear during the day that she pee on her pad (we had a puppy apt)I made a big deal out of it with treats and high pitched "good pee pee". I put her in the pee side every two hours saying go pee pee get a treat! I also made sure she new when she went in the wrong place. I changed my tone, said a strong "no no bad pee pee", even if I didn't catch her. I picked her up and pointed at it. I also let her watch me clean it up.
She now runs to her crate to pee or poop in her potty side. She sleeps in a large crate in my daughters room with a bed and pee pad. Sometimes she holds it until we bring her downstairs and sometimes she doesn't but she always goes on the pad. Now if I could just stop her from running through her poo in her crate if Im not home that would be great...

I got my Bella at 8 weeks. I removed food and water one hour before bed time, and made sure she had a potty break just before I put her in her crate for the night. For the first week or so, I set the alarm for 2 AM to take her out for a potty break, and then again at 5:30 AM when I get up for the day. She only peed in her crate once the whole time, and that was on a weekend when I got out of bed at a later time without giving her a second potty break. Now that she is 15 weeks old, I don't need an alarm clock--she wakes me up with small whines when she needs to go out to potty, around 3:30 AM, so she's learning to hold it longer.

It's important to have several consistent nights in which Jasper does not pee in his cage so he can get the right idea of what is expected of him. If you are giving him multiple potty breaks in the night and early morning and he is still peeing in his bed, it might be a sign of a more serious physiological or psychological problem, and you should consider consulting the vet.

Well that's good! I'm hoping as she matures, she'll understand me as well. I overly praise too, give treats, & let her watch me clean up. Almost every day I'm putting a nice smelling clean bed in her crate & I know she knows its clean..but then she pees or poos on it..ugh! I'm just going to keep it up and keep my fingers crossed. I'm right there w/u, I hate when she tracks poo all over the crate! it's the worst. And now she's started shredding her pee pads up completely..she's very destructive.

Keep doing what you are doing, remember they have such tiny little bladder at this age and can only hold it for a short while. The older they get the longer they will be able to hold it in. I think if you get them out for potty before you go to bed and once or twice during the night that should help. It may take some time and definitely loss of sleep in order to get them to the point of being able to hold it all night long but it will happen, trust me.

* Take up the food at the same time every night.

* Take up the water at least two hours before you go to bead and be sure you take them out before putting your pup in their cage for the night.

* You can keep the cage a small as you can but unless you can hear the pups cries in the night to be let out they will still go in their cage.

* Put the pups cage right beside your bed at night so that you can hear them whimper when they need to go potty.

* Praise, Praise Praise...them for a job well done, during the day when they go potty to reassure them they are doing the right thing.

Work on teaching them their name, and the come cammand. It is a great way to teach them to come to you when it potty time. You can find more about this on my site.

Thanks for the advice. While it makes me feel bad, I wont let him have water during the night and I have my alarm set for 2:30. Keep your fingers crossed this works. He has a vet appt on Friday to get his last set of shots, ive added this to my list of things to discuss.

It's so nice to be able to pop in here with a question or ask for advice. I realize that you all aren't vets or genies that can see Jasper through the Internet...but, guidance is so important and appreciated by me. I knew from my research that the yorkie breed was so different from any I had ever owned...but I truly had NO IDEA until I had one of my own. I just want to be the best informed owner that I can be. I'm sure I'm not alone in my thoughts. Just wanted to throw that out there. So, thank you again!

Well I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and the others who are having potty issues that you find what works for you and your pups.

SUCCESS!! Jasper had a dry night!! I got him up at 11:00 before I turned in and then again at 2:30. I'm guessing his interruption in sleep caused him to sleep til 7:00 this morning! So WHOOP WHOOP!! Mama is a happy camper right now.
