| Leash Training I am having the hardest time with getting King to walk on the leash. He is 3 months old, and we have just gotten him to the point with his shots where we are comfortable with him being outside in the grass. King bites the leash and growls at it. He almost goes into panic when we come near him with it. Any suggestions?? Is it too early to even try to put him on a leash?? |

| Nope, not too early. The earlier, the better (in my humble opinion!) Please tell me that you are using a harness on your baby though, and not attaching the leash to the collar. Anyway, once the leash is attached to the harness let your baby walk around with it on (keep a close eye, though, so that he doesn't get caught on anything.) He'll soon realize that the leash won't hurt him. Also, treats are helpful- reward him for good behavior. =) Blazer was never scared of his leash but he would, at first, bite at it. I see many dogs- full grown- that go for walks and have to be biting the leash, as if they are walking themselves. It's pretty amusing to see. =)

Just keep working with him on it and putting in on him, taking it right back off so he doesn't have to endure that "scary" thing for long. Every few times you put it on, leave it on a little longer and feed him treats. Eventually he will grow used to wearing it and will stop fighting it and biting it, even when walking.

| Thank you ladies so much! I was afraid I was doing something wrong. I really need him start peeing and pooping outside! I do have a harness, but yes I admit I was hooking the leash to the collar at first! I'm still learning! But this potty training is tough!! |

| Took me over a year to train my Tibbe (got him when he was 9 mos. old) but he's now totally clean in the house. All the work of going right by a schedule, coming home to let him out to potty instead of going shopping, taking him out ON SCHEDULE no matter what else was going on, watching him like a hawk when he wasn't in his wire crate - which was 90 percent; of the time, never letting him roam the house that first year and taking him out after any and all excitement all eventually paid off. The only time Tibbe was in his crate was when I left the room for longer than 5 seconds or left the house but the rest of the time he was confined to the room I was in and I watched him constantly for a whole year. After a year, he got complete run of the house and for another year, he had some "accidents" but after that, they stopped entirely. Don't expect miracles just don't give them chances to mess up and they will learn. But letting them out on schedule and after each exciting thing that happens - after coming out of the crate, after loving or play sessions, after a bath, after grooming, after clipping toenails, after training, after greeting you, family or company, after someone comes to the door, after a hard barking session, after coming in from a walk - etc. All of these kinds of things can cause excitement and trigger the need to urinate or defecate in a young or untrained dog. Plus, let you dog out on a regular schedule in addition to following these times of excitement. If you will do it that way, your dog will in time learn that he can rely on being let out so often it is easy to hold it until then. He'll make the association that going outside is the natural thing for a dog to do and actually want to make his mark outside where the whole world can "enjoy" his scent. Playing into that and letting him out there very often and watching him or confining him the rest of the time during training will give him the big picture. But it takes time and bladder control for them to get to the goal of fully housebroken.

| We started Princess Sophie on the leash inside the house to aid in potty training. I tethered her to my belt loop and where ever I went, she came along with me. I give that training credit (given to me by another YT member) for her not being afraid on the leash. When we go outside, it's just the same, where ever I go she's right there beside me. Our mini-schnauzer is another story together. He behaves the same way your pup does and he's 9 years old. I am afraid I never took the time to train him properly to walk on the leash. My bad!! I won't ever be walking them both at the same time. LOL

| Potential for collapsed trachea. Much higher risk in toy breeds, and quite common, I understand.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | They do get better on the leash. Galen was the same way. Just keep at it. They will get used to it.

| They can wear a collar for tags, but I always hook the leash to a harness. Maybe you can get one to match the collar & leash you have?

| Don't worry, just go back to the store and see if you can find a matching harness. It will be fine!!! We keep a collar on Princess Sophie so there is something to hang her tags and ID on. That stays on all the time except for when she gets combed out every evening. Just in case she "escapes". Hasn't happened yet but I've heard from others here who have had that happen. ID is very important!!
