Senior Yorkie Talker | Barking Harley (6mos) has suddenly started barking. He's never done it before but when he hears the door open or someone knock, he barks. He barked at our neighbor the whole time stood in my sewing room the other day. It doesn't bother me when he barks at strange noises or because he doesn't know who's coming in. However my husband hates it. His opposition to a small dog is that "they're yappy". Harley is hardly yappy but I'm afraid he will become that way. Is there any way other than shushing him to stop it. Will shushing him even make him stop? I don't mind him barking when the door opens or someone knocks (even though my hubby does), but I don't want him barking at our guests.

| It took a lot of practice and constant consistancy...i rewarded Scoobers for growling and used whatever safely worked to discourage barking. Overtime now he will growl at noises instead of barking. Much more pleasent on the ears here and atill lets him feel he is doing his guard dog duty. Doggy time out, loud noises, ignoring, shushing works with effort time and consistancy. Such items as spray and static or shock collars (static vibration shockthere vibration) IMHO are nothing short of cruel. Manu companies now offer vibration collars CAREFUL! some say vivration but actually use shock, test on yourself first (or your husband as I personally suggest) and ensure it only vibrates! Even with vibration there are levels of intensity start at the LOWEST, also most are remote controlled only much better for training...only use these under complete supervision if you go this route, please.
