Keeping him occupied in crate Ben is 10 weeks old - and he is in his crate sleeping and occasionally giving his fluffy toy hell but mostly he is doing nothing but sleep. He doesn't play with his chew toys in his crate. When he's out I can occasionally get him to play with the toys but mostly he likes to play stuff that involves running about the house or garden. Should I be worried that he doesn't have a chew on his toys in his crate? I feel sorry leaving him in there forcing him to sleep because he has nothing else (that he wants) to do.

my Emy is 6 months old and I don't put anything in with her except her blankie and some t-shirts with my scent on them, cause I don't want her to tear it up and swallow it if I'm not right with her...she's a chewer though, but still you don't want to put anything in with her if she's alone in case it would get caught somewhere in the crate or she would tear something up and swallow it....

That's interesting - and I can understand the need to keep him safe in his Den. However it contradicts what I learnt about chew toy training. It's a confusing thing being owned by a dog. I was thinking about a nylabone - could he come to harm with that? It seems so unfair to see him go into his crate (especially when I also have to go out) knowing that he'll have nothing to do but pace about (and whine occasionally).

I've put a nylabone in with her while I was home and working in my office, and it would slip in between the wire of the crate and get stuck, so I'm leary about leaving anything that can get stuck in the crate. I only leave her for an hour in the crate and I leave when she's sleeping....so I don't think she's really pacing..whining yes...when I open the door to bring in groceries I can hear her whining...I guess I'm just overprotective of her, and if it can happen it will....proactive I guess....what do others do when they leave the house and crate their babies...what do you put in their crate with them?

| I will sometimes fill a Kong toy with plain non-fat vanilla yogurt, put the it in the freezer for a few hours until the yogurt is frozen and then give it to my puppy when she has to be left in her crate. The Kongs are pretty tough (I've never had either of my dogs destroy one), and at least for my crate, it is too wide to fit through the bars and get stuck or for Karli to swallow it. Plus, the yogurt makes for a healthy snack and is an incentive for the puppy to play with the toy. Worth a try! -C
