Senior Yorkie Talker | Question about potty training at night My five month old pup does fairly well during the day but won't go outside at night. We always try to give him encouragement but he hates the dark! We take him out at least two times before bed but he inevitably he goes pee and poop in the house. It is very frustrating and just now he pooped and peed on the floor. As I said, he is very good during the day. Any thoughts and guidance would be greatly appreciated. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | After thought My husband thinks we should rub his nose in it and scold him. I say no but we are arguing about it and tension is high. Milo just keeps going in the house after dark. What do you all think? |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Overnight is a long time to hold it for a pup. I'm a believer in keeping pups in an X-pen any time you're not directly supervising them. In the X-pen, have their bed on one side and a pee pad on the other. The theory is that they won't soil their bed but will go as far away as possible. At the very least, you're confining accidents to one area of the house. I did that with my last pup. She now prefers to go outside, but if she's in the house for a long time with no one to let her out she'll use the pad. If you really don't want to do that, make going out at night more fun. Offer a treat for just walking out the door. Once there, toss a toy. When they go, reward with praise and another treat. But I'd still take them out in the middle of the night. Good luck.

| My Ziva (3 yo) does not step outside at night, she stands at the garage door and watches the other two. She has always been like this. I put newspapers on an old rubbermaid tub cover in the garage and she is very happy to use that. She uses it in rain, too. Picky little Princess! |

| Do you use a bright flash light and point it right on front so he can see where he is going? Sheldon used to be afraid of the dark until I started to poing ahead of him with the light. Good luck! |

| Oh poor baby! Jackson is not afraid of the dark but he is TERRIFIED of rain lol! I'm putting the sprinkler on now cause it's raining alot more & want him to know hey it's water your not sugar you won't melt!! He's gotten better and just does his business extra quick. :P Maybe have lights put out in the back yard & the first couple times have your hubby & you go out there with him so he feels safe! Jackson is 5months old & holds it over night with no problems but I do keep him in a playpen at night so he doesn't have an accident all over the house! He loves it & we have a great routine! Good Luck. |
