| Potty Training Blues I have the potty training blues, I love my pup, I am home with him all day, we have a BLAST and he is very affectionate... I got puppy pads for him and at first it seemed to work! But lately it is as if he has no concept of what they are for, he has about a 15x20 room all to himself food and bed far away from the pad in opposite corner, I have him babygated in (which is 36 inches high and he CAN climb over now btw). But he continues to pee and poop AROUND the pad or worse near his bed and food (logic would say dont go by your food or bed) but he does. I even have tried crating him for short times (2 hours during day) and controling the food so I have more of an idea when he eats and will be ready to go, but if I leave him in his room he either goes at random in the room, shreds the pad cuz im not with him and hes mad i guess, now he can climb so he climbs out and pees and poops wherever... (all over basically). I am consistant to say NO when i catch him going and to take him STRAIGHT to the pad, sit down say (nicely at this point) "go potty!" etc, yet all of that means nothing to buddy i guess, the moment i let him out of that room he runs out and within 5 mins has peed and pooped if he can do it fast enough. I just don't get what I am missing or doing wrong, I monitor the food and water, have even crated and done it overnight too, next morning spent a GOOD 45 mins on floor with him, KNOWING he had to go, knowing he was hungry etc, put food out talked to him let him eat (KNEW it was coming) yet 45 mins later still nothing, i go to take a shower and he has climbed out and peed and pooped in the living room floor UGHHH! I am gonna setup the video camera cuz nobody believes this 4lb dog is climbing a 3 foot gate straight up vertical, i swear he is a cat, he will get on the kitchen chair, to the table, LEAP to the counter to get to the paper towel rack and or fruit bowl... that to me is cat like behavior but my runty little 4lb pup does it everyday. I even went out and got a steam cleaner for my carpets but I don't want to loose this battle, I have been trying patiently to praise, monitor, crate, give treats for potty even, just it seems to be going backwards.. Petco sells this drops stuff that supposedly is scented to help them "go" where you put the drops, has anyone used it and does it work? I am also about to look into the pads you wash and re-use, can they shread them like he does currently with the toss out pads? He also shreds newspaper (tried that) BiG mess, also tried the doggie litter stuff, even BIGGER mess, and he ate a ton of it vs peeing in it LOL... buddy is at 14 weeks now btw, and overall EXCELLENT dog just gotta get some way to come to terms on this potty stuff. Bill

| Hi Bill - sometimes it takes a LONG time for these small dogs to learn - you can't complain until he is 6 months old and even then he can have accidents sometimes. We were told not to expect anything until our dog was a year and she wasn't 100% housebroken until then either. It's got nothing to do with you or the dogs personality - it's because they are so small. What you can do is this - every time he has eaten, played or slept you take him out for a walk of 30 minutes straight away (that's a lot of walking the first 6 months, but you'll be glad you did it). Bring small treats and every time he pees or poops praise him and give him a treat. Small dogs pee a lot of times with a little amount, that's why the treats will have to be tiny. I take my dogs paws and scratch the door every time I take them out - to teach them to scratch the door to get out. Someone suggested a smell bell next to the door that you ring every time you go out with dogs if you don't want them scratching the door. There's a bonus to this: Dogs are not challenged when they are asked to fetch a stick or run a mile. What really challenges it is using it's nose - and walking the dog so it can sniff the world will challenge it - and stimulate him Good luck

| Hey Bill.. you are describing my exact problems! my little 4.5 lb puppy can climb out of a 3 foot baby pen but cant jump up on a 2 foot bed... so weiiirdddd. anyways, i have sat with him for 2.5 hrs before, when i KNEW he had to go.. he hadn't gone in 5 hrs.. so i knew he had to go.. the second i thought, ok... maybe im wrong and he doesnt have to go... he pees and poos everywhere that hes not suppose to. i know the feeling. I have the reuseable pee pads.. i have never tried the throw away kind.. but i know that my Wookie will tear those to pieces... sometimes he thinks its his bed, so he will lay on it.. even if he has peed on it, which is grose.. but he doesnt chew it up, sometimes he plays with the tag that sticks out, but he loves to play with tags. iv only had my puppy for a couple of weeks.. and im already loosing sleep over him. im not home during the day, so i try hard when i am to make sure he goes on the pad and give him treats.. i think wookie has stage freight, he wont go if im watching him.. so i have only been able to make him go where i want about 10-12 times in the past few weeks.. but it feel ssooooo good when he does go. i also find that distracting him and playing with him will keep his mind off of peeing on the carpet.. then i take him immediately to the pad...sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. or taking him outside.. playing, running, walking.. i think activity will make him want to go faster, so it helps when you take him right away to the pee pad after he has played. because you KNOW he has to go after he naps and after he plays... but trying to make him go on the pad is challenging.. sometimes i pretend that im not looking at him to get him to go... and like i said, sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesnt. but when it does.. i have a potty party, LoL! all i know is that consistancy works.. i tried taking him outside, but now he thinkgs outside is play... and also!! oh yeah.. if you catch him peeing on the carpet.. before you clean it up, soak up some of the pee with the pee pad, he is more likely to go where he has already been.. so that might help! sorry so long, just trying to help. |

| I have a sneaky pottier. I can't correct her because she goes when I'm not looking. Especially pooping, but it is mostly in one room which doesn't have carpet, which is good. I have tried taking her out first thing in the morning when I know she has to go, can be out for 30 minutes and she still doesn't go. When I bring her in sometimes shes goes as soon as we get inside. I took her camping this weekend and she went outside all the time, only 2 accidents in the camper. When we got home she was back to not wanting to go outside again. Yes it is very flustrating and I'm trying not to get discourgaged. Shes about 5 1/2 months, so I know it will still take time. |

| Oh yes and the good news is that since she is sneaky, she knows it is wrong. Have you tried bringing treats on your walks and giving them to her when she pees or poops?

| Maggie could climb her baby gate at 2 months old. We had to put a formica panel on it. Do you have a yard? Outside training is so easy. Maggie would never use a pad. She would just rip them apart. We trained her for outside. She even rings a bell on the backdoor. She is now 4 months old, but it took two months of interrupted sleep to get her housebroken.
