Hey Bill.. you are describing my exact problems!
my little 4.5 lb puppy can climb out of a 3 foot baby pen but cant jump up on a 2 foot bed... so weiiirdddd.
anyways, i have sat with him for 2.5 hrs before, when i KNEW he had to go.. he hadn't gone in 5 hrs.. so i knew he had to go.. the second i thought, ok... maybe im wrong and he doesnt have to go... he pees and poos everywhere that hes not suppose to.
i know the feeling.
I have the reuseable pee pads.. i have never tried the throw away kind.. but i know that my Wookie will tear those to pieces...
sometimes he thinks its his bed, so he will lay on it.. even if he has peed on it, which is grose.. but he doesnt chew it up, sometimes he plays with the tag that sticks out, but he loves to play with tags. iv only had my puppy for a couple of weeks.. and im already loosing sleep over him. im not home during the day, so i try hard when i am to make sure he goes on the pad and give him treats.. i think wookie has stage freight, he wont go if im watching him.. so i have only been able to make him go where i want about 10-12 times in the past few weeks.. but it feel ssooooo good when he does go.
i also find that distracting him and playing with him will keep his mind off of peeing on the carpet.. then i take him immediately to the pad...sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. or taking him outside.. playing, running, walking.. i think activity will make him want to go faster, so it helps when you take him right away to the pee pad after he has played. because you KNOW he has to go after he naps and after he plays... but trying to make him go on the pad is challenging.. sometimes i pretend that im not looking at him to get him to go... and like i said, sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesnt. but when it does.. i have a potty party, LoL!
all i know is that consistancy works..
i tried taking him outside, but now he thinkgs outside is play... and also!! oh yeah.. if you catch him peeing on the carpet.. before you clean it up, soak up some of the pee with the pee pad, he is more likely to go where he has already been.. so that might help!
sorry so long, just trying to help.
