| Need Help?!? He's scared My 13 wk old Bentley is scared of his food bowl. I have had him a week and could barely get him to eat. I was following with the "he'll eat when he gets hungry enough" line of thought. This morning he got excited when I got his food out. I set it down and he went to eat out of it and jumped back like it bit him. He did this a couple of times without getting any food. I took a handful of food out and laid it on the floor and he ate it immediately. Not sure what to do here. I don't want dog food in my floor all the time, but he is so small. He has to eat. Advice/Tips??? |

| Ziva eats from a small side dish, like from a restaurant. I think it comes from her breeder feeding her by hand off a saucer. She will not put her face into anything and eats very carefully one piece at a time- not like Abby who had to fight with 5 other puppies to eat and will dive into a bowl and gobble anything down. Good luck finding the right dish! |

| Change the bowl... stainless steel is best but ceramic or glass is good (no lead in the glaze). Or put the bowl with food in it on a paper plate and put food on the plate around the bowl... maybe he'll get used to it. If not, change the bowl. Make sure he's drinking too.

| When Lulu was small she would NOT eat out the bowl either. We figured out that her rabies tag was hitting the side of the bowl and she was scared of the nosie. So we got a smaller bowl and took off the tag,and she finally ate. Good luck! |

| Harry was afraid of his bowl too - it was stainless steel and he could see himself in the bottom - I think he thought it was 'the enemy'....!!! We changed it to a plain ceramic one - and he hasn't stopped eating since.... Sally + Harry x |

| That's what Oliver does. He was tipping over bowls, he has a stainless steel non tip bowl for water, he can't tip it but he puts his paw on it when he drinks. Food...he either pushed food out of his bowl and eats off floor or he grabs a mouthful and runs in another room to crunch away.

| My yorkie poo Ruby will take a mouthful and take it to the rug to eat. Maybe she was like this as a pup too. She was an adult when we got her. Thanks for all of this advice. I am putting it on a saucer for now, but he is still unsure. Maybe he just needs more time. |

| My Gina would back off from her food if her tags hit the bowl. The sound scared her. Glittler 1023 mentioned this also. I agree with all that said to get a smaller bowl.

| This seems to be a Yorkie thing My guys are afraid of bowls and dishes as well Paper plates are fine but if you want him to eat from a bowl just try this trick if you're up for it Take the bowl and either make believe that you're eating from it or actually put some things that you know he likes ... treats and things and leave it out for him He'll likely explore at his own leisure

| If you don't want to change bowls, try smearing a miniscule amount of peanut butter on the edges. My Dori will not eat unless I throw her 2-3 pieces of kibble. She gathers them up, runs to her bed, crunches them down, then approaches her bowl. This is a game she taught me!

| My little Jilly was afraid of her bowl for 2 or 3 years but we finally worked it out & she would eat out of it. I kept putting her food on paper towels far away from the empty bowl, then closer & closer until she would eat her food off the paper towel right next to it. Finally, I put one end of the paper towel with a piece of food on it in the bowl & she ignored it, meal after meal - day after day - week after week. Finally, after taking that piece out of the bowl so often uneaten, one day it was gone when I started to get it out. She'd grown accustomed to a piece of food in there & gone in for it. Before long, no more single piece in there, there were 2, then 3, then lots more & she ate them all. She worked up to being desensitized to the food being in that bowl & it not hurting or scaring her & finally, it wasn't an issue most of the time & she ate her meals from it. Then she would relapse & we would have food on paper towels for a night or two - but then she would go back to eating out of the bowl as if she'd forgotten she was scared of it. Might try something like that - it's a lot of trouble but it could help yours.
