| Rolling over and submitting Maggie has just started doing this, with every dog she meets. Big dog, little dog, it doesn't matter. One time she peed when she did this. Is she afraid? She just started this in the last couple of months. However, at home, she is top dog, she is the dominant dog. She won't just roll over once and get up, she lays there while the other dog sniffs, no matter how long the other dog wants to sniff. Let her do it, pick her up?? Any suggestions?

| Not got a clue...but I'm interested in hearing advice on this topic. My ZoE, to see her at home and with people visiting, seems like a really confident dog. But put her around other dogs and she is incredibly timid. I started taking her to a local dog park. The first time there she darted to the far corner and flattened herself to the ground. Then it got where she would stand either hunched or flattened down with her tail tucked under as another dog sniffed her. Now, she'll actually go up to new dogs and sniff them herself. She's still definately on the more timid side compared to some of the confident dogs there, but it's like night & day compared to the first time there. So, while her socialization skills have improved tremendously, she's still retained her shy personality...don't know whether that ever changes.

| Personally, I think this is excellent behavior. It's totally non threatening and most dogs will react well to this. Of course, please make sure she is always safe... |

| Georgie has done this a couple of times when he was younger with my brothers lab who is as sweet as can be. I think he is just submitting to Buddie. I don't think he is necessarily afraid but others are much more knowledgeable than I am.

| Thanks! I didn't know if I should be worried or let it go. She just started doing this and I was surprised that she was submitting to all of the dogs (except Buster).

| Also interested in hearing any input on this, this is EXACTLY what Luma does at the dog park. Even when she met another yorkie who was half her size.

| Max did this the first 5 or 6 times we went to the dog park. In fact he would play fainting goat and just stop and completely lay on his side. When a dog approached he would roll onto his back. When a dog was play chasing him he would come to a dead stop mid run and then just drop to the ground and roll over. I was pretty upset about it at first but it seems that this behavior just went away. Max also used to pee or lay there until the other dog walked away. I coaxed him to get up. I'm sorry i can't give you any more information as to why this happens. It's submissive and I certainly don't think it's a bad thing.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Ruby is the aggressor in our home and has had several fights with one of our other three. But lately she has been being more and more submissive with the rolling over on her back to allow the others to sniff her. She just lays there Spread Eagle begging for attention from them. So, in my home that is a Good thing ! I look at is as kind of a lets be friends sort of action to strange dogs. It is like the doggy hand shake (butt sniff) but without all of the beating around the bush. She's just saying: Sniff all you want and than lets get down to the fun part (play time) of this encounter. As far as the peeing thing, I can see that being a scared reaction to a larger dog. I'm thinking it will pass once they get to know each other more.

| My friend, who is a dog groomer, has a border terrier who does exactly this - rolls and submits to any and every dog she meets. We seem to laugh about it as flirting......! My friend is well read on dogs, and this doesn't seem to concern her, and her dog is happy.....? Not an expert, but just an experience to share! |
