| New and Frustrated Hi everyone! I've been looking around the site for about a month (just before getting my pup Mac who is now 13wks) and am starting to get a little frustrated with potty training. I am using the potty patch outdoors for the majority of the day and pee pads indoors for one go during the night. He will usually pee when I take him outdoors to the patch for potty breaks (we're crate training). Sometimes he will go in the house during play time which is shortly after he eats. I take him out right after he eats but, he won't go. Soon as I get back in the house he goes! I thought maybe I'm not waiting long enough but when I tried waiting longer her just lays on the patch and plays. I also read (on YT) if you put them back in the crate for a few minutes then back out to potty until the go potty helps. Heck, he just goes in the crate! And don't let me get on the poo... at first he seemed to hide when taking a poo. Once I figured out his poo schedule I made sure to take him out accordingly but he won't go. He'll wait until he's back inside. He seems to prefer the pee pad for poo but then gets the rug mixed up with the pad? Ugh... It's frustrating. Question... We have artificial grass in the backyard and I am using the potty patch on the side of the house to train. Is it unrealistic of me to think he'll understand the difference and know where I want him to go? I do take him out on a leash. Once he goes he gets to run the yard but, I have caught him about to poo in the "grass" and had to whisk him off to the patch. |

| My pup took a long time, he still has accidents if he gets distracted. He is still young. It sounds like you are doing the right thing just have patience. He will figure out. They are stubborn breed to potty train. Patience and persistence is the key. |

| Hi and Welcome to YT! Adding treats to good potties can help drive the message home... along with tons of praise. They can learn to go potty in a particular area of your choosing.

| Thanks for the feedback! Sorry for the late response. I didn't realize I was getting responses. Still figuring the forum out. We are still working on the potty training with the potty patch. I've added a bell into the equation so he has a way to let us know he needs to go out. So, we take his paw and ding the bell, take him out and if he goes he gets a treat. I've also started to keep him on the leash and hooked to me at all times when he is not on a leash. This way I can watch for potty/poopy signals. I read that on here, too! hrossen, as you stated he's still young but, we'll get there! |

| WhooooBoy .... all the stories of training problems with Yorkie pups Yeah every Yorkie pup should come with a label that says .... there will be delays in housetraining But it sounds like you're on the right track Pups need to be watched whenever they have free reign What does work well is the ever shrinking wee wee pad .... where an area gets carpetted with pads and you remove more and more with time until there's just one left

| Ruger is almost 4 and still has problems, but everybody tells me if you keep at it they will get it. As many horror stories as there are, Yorkies are very smart and learn quickly. They also have very small bladders, so you need to take that into consideration. Also, you can scold them -- gently -- but you have to catch them in the act, so keep him close. Finally, if this keeps up it may be wise to get him checked out. Sometimes minor medical problems can cause "accidents." Keep us posted on your progress. |
