Default New and Frustrated

Hi everyone! I've been looking around the site for about a month (just before getting my pup Mac who is now 13wks) and am starting to get a little frustrated with potty training. I am using the potty patch outdoors for the majority of the day and pee pads indoors for one go during the night. He will usually pee when I take him outdoors to the patch for potty breaks (we're crate training). Sometimes he will go in the house during play time which is shortly after he eats. I take him out right after he eats but, he won't go. Soon as I get back in the house he goes! I thought maybe I'm not waiting long enough but when I tried waiting longer her just lays on the patch and plays. I also read (on YT) if you put them back in the crate for a few minutes then back out to potty until the go potty helps. Heck, he just goes in the crate! And don't let me get on the poo... at first he seemed to hide when taking a poo. Once I figured out his poo schedule I made sure to take him out accordingly but he won't go. He'll wait until he's back inside. He seems to prefer the pee pad for poo but then gets the rug mixed up with the pad? Ugh... It's frustrating.

Question... We have artificial grass in the backyard and I am using the potty patch on the side of the house to train. Is it unrealistic of me to think he'll understand the difference and know where I want him to go? I do take him out on a leash. Once he goes he gets to run the yard but, I have caught him about to poo in the "grass" and had to whisk him off to the patch.
