Barking at other dogs on walks? How do you prevent your dog from barking at others during walks. My puppy is just 4 months old and just started walks. He's pretty well socialized, but will bark at other dogs. Should I scold him or distract him? or what?

If your puppy is well socialized with other dogs as well as humans (as both are recommended) then I would start with the turn-around method. It worked with Sprout. I don't remember where I read it or saw it...but it definitely worked for us. This is what we did: When you're walking, the *second* your puppy sees another dog and begins to bark...turn around and start walking the other direction (from whence you came). Your dog should stop barking when you're moving opposite the other dog. The *moment* he stops barking...freak out and praise him lavishly like a complete spazz. lol (who cares if people see/hear you). This will let him know that you really like it when he's quiet. Once he's been quiet and you've praised him, then and only then, turn around and start walking toward the dog again. If he barks...keep repeating the above steps. Eventually, he'll realize that you prefer him not to bark at other animals on his walk. Sprout took a good week or so of doing this before he caught on..but once he did he was good to go (no reverting). As a side note though...I *strongly* recommend that you pick your puppy up whenever you are going to be crossing paths with another dog on the same side of the street. Some dogs who look friendly, whose owners even *say* they are friendly - aren't. I always pick Sprout up when we come within a certain range of another animal on the same sidewalk, and put him down again when they are at a safe distance (even if they're on a leash).

Thank you. So far I've been trying this and I don't think it's been working...maybe I'll just keep it up. It's just so hard to get him to even acknowledge me when he sees another dog

Hi guys sorry for bringing this up again. I've tried the turn around method. It seems to work somewhat but then the next time I take my puppy out he will be belligerant with other dogs again. Even humans he will sometimes lunge at. It's really getting annoying as I've been taking him for walks 2-5 times a day and he continues to do this. I tried to socialize him a lot when he was younger, but he got his last shot at 4 months just about 2 and a half weeks ago. He mainly stayed in my arms or in a carrying case that u could see through. I would take him into the movies, parks, pet store, he met other dogs/people etc. He used to be so quiet. Not until I started taking him on walks does he start barking. He particularly likes to bark at other small dogs behind fences or if they walk by us. I live in a pretty dense neighborhood in Los Angeles, there are a lot of small yappy dogs here and you run into lots of people walking around with or without dogs. There are little dogs in my neighborhood which bark constantly and I think Theo hears them and has started barking back, even when we are in my apartment. I even walk him away and give him a treat when he stops barking. Anyone have any other advice. Do you think I should get him neutered, would this help with the aggression? I'm guessing it's mainly fear based barking, but he will really lunge and bark fiercely at other dogs. Help! Last edited by YorkieMiki; 02-08-2012 at 03:23 PM.

Also, should I correct him when he does bark? by saying NO! or QUIET!? or should I just distract him by pulling him away from the situation?
