New here, yet another potty question..... Hello all, I have read dozens of the potty training posts here and my head is spinning. If anyone can advise me what I am doing wrong please do. I adopted a male yorkie from a puppy mill rescue group 3 months ago. The vet who neutered him, gave shots, etc. estimated he was approx 2 years old. Of course, I can only imagine how horrid his life was, so I am trying to be patient with him, but he is not getting the housebreaking thing. When I am not home I keep him in a crate. He normally will not go in the crate, but will lift his leg to go out the side. Not sure how to stop this so I have it surrounded with newspaper. At night he sleeps on my bed and is good throughout the night with no accidents. First thing in the morning I take him to the puppy pad that I keep in the bathroom and shut the door until he goes. I make sure to praise him for going. As soon as I let him out of the crate when I come we go to the pad also but when I'm home with him he will just pee little spots wherever he pleases. Also will not poop on the pad, is very sneaky about that. He will not go outdoors at all. He seems terrified when I take him outside for any reason. Maybe his past.... Please help. I know he's been through a lot and I want to do the right thing with him.

I'm in no way an expert, but I'd like to offer a few thoughts. First, I think you are sending some mixed signals by wanting success with the pads, crate, and outside. I'd pick one method and stick with it....I'd stick with the pads since you've already started. I think the key will really be patience and reinforcement (might want to add a special food treat to the praise). Almost all yorkies take a long time to housebreak and yours will probably be especially difficult given his past. He probably isn't doing too great at the moment due to a mixture of his past conditions and slightly mixed messages from you. Since the crate isn't stopping peeing, I would think about a puppy playpen where you could put a pad in with him (put the pen on some not too valuable flooring). Finally, just something to think about with sleeping in the bed...supposedly can create some alpha dog issues (which might reinforce to the dog that he can pee anywhere)....so maybe try a dog bed in a playpen? Again, not an expert, but I hope there's some help there. Good luck.

Thanks for the insight. Maybe I am confusing him. I don't even try to take him outside anymore, we are working strictly on the pads this week. I put him in his crate only when I'm not home, but he hasn't been in there much lately. I just opened a business and I have a private office with his pads so he has been coming to work with me every day. I'm trying to really keep an eye on him so I can learn his patterns. He's just sooo sneaky and quick about going and I know I have to catch him in the act. The pen is a good idea. I will look into getting one this weekend for him.
