| Potty Training Help...(Yes i read the articles above first) I have read tons of forums on potty training and they all have very good ideas. I have tired to incorporate some of all of them however it is not even coming close to working. My husband and I are new to the area (Goldsboro NC) and this is our first puppy as a couple. We both work mon-fri. So the puppy is left at home Mon-Fri from 800am to 4 or 5 pm. Our jobs are 30-45 mins away so coming home on lunch is turning out to be very expensive and making our bosses a bit angry because we are having to take longer than normal lunches. We don't have any family or friends in the area that can come and help so this isn't an option. When we are home with Cooper we do the leash attachment type training. The puppy is constantly tied to one of us so we can watch and catch him urinating. It's not working very well at all. In the beginning we were able to catch him (He would get very still and stretch his body out to urinate). We would do the loud AH! and take him outside. Now he just walks around and pees. There is no warning or pausing. He just walks and pees. Of course this makes the problem worse because there isn't just a single puddle of pee but a foot long stream. I've also read that we should place him in a crate when we aren't interacting with him. for some reason i find this cruel. Can someone please help me change my thinking on this? I see where it helps but i feel like leaving an active puppy in a crate because i'm busy is cruel to him. With all the difficulties i'm having potty training him i have been thinking a lot about a potty patch. I"I've always been so against the potty patches. 1 i feel like the pup has to be trained twice. Once to use the potty patch and once to go outside. It just seems to be double the work. I don't want this to be a FOREVER bathroom just a temporary one to help out until he catches on about going outside ONLY. Also, I find it kind of gross. A place my pup is allowed to poop and Pee in the house isn't appealing at all. I've been thinking about where i would put the patch. I definitely don't want to sit in the living room and look at my dogs bathroom. Don't want it in the dining areas or kitchen or bedroom for reason that are obvious and the bathroom is too small. But on the flip side of that it would be much better to have him go to one area and know where to expect it versus walking through the house and stepping in it all through the house. I really need advice..counseling.. ideas.. teaching..anything. Very stressed! |

| You said you've read many other posts, so you'll see most people suggest crate training (as would I). Most vets and dog behaviorists suggest it too. Crate training is not good if done incorrectly, but it's generally regarded as the best housetraining method if done correctly (perfectly humane). Done correctly, the dog sees it as his own little den or room where he can relax (and not to potty in). I won't go in to all the details since you can find that anywhere, but I will say you have to gently introduce the crate and increase time gradually. All that said, don't crate train if nobody can come to let him out during the day (the whole they can hold it for the number of hours equal to age in months plus one hour). I would consider hiring a responsible dog sitter/walker to come let him out during the day. Try not to get too stressed. Many other yorkie owners are going through something like this (including me). The hard work will pay off. |

| Hi and Welcome to YT! How old is he? Instead of a crate, you could use an Xpen, and put the crate in the Xpen with the door of the crate removed. Line the xpen with peepads, then gradually decrease the number of pads till he's only using one. Training a Yorkie to potty outside: Start on a weekend, or when you have two days off together. For very young pups, take him out every two hours. If he still has accidents in the house, take him out every 1-1.5 hours. When he pees outside, praise, praise, praise him, and give him a treat. This lets him know he did good! You can name it... when you go out tell him, 'Okay, let's go potty' or whatever phrase you want to use, but be consistant so he'll learn what it means. Any mistakes he makes in the house should be cleaned up immediately with an enzymatic cleaner. Do not scold or punish him. Continue taking him out to potty and praise and reward when he does. Sometimes punishing or even interrupting a pup while peeing can have adverse effects, and they will hide and become fearful of going in front of you or at all. Ignore his mistakes, and really concentrate on rewarding him when he does it right. He will learn quicker this way. As for him peeing while walking (in the house)... he may have a Urinary tract infection, or he fears being caught and picked up... If you take him out on a regular basis, this should stop, if it doesn't or gets worse... see the vet. Key times for him to have to relieve himself are: upon waking in the morning, after a playtime, upon waking from a nap, after meals, and right before bedtime.

| I'm not sure how young your pup is, and I can appreciate the fact that you have to work during the day. But it IS possbile to potty train him. When Rocco was young, I would try to come home at lunch most days to let him out. When I couldn't, I gated him off in the kitchen, with potty pads, food, water and toys, then worked on training while I was home. He stays home about 6-7 hours alone during the day. The best you can do is train him on the potty pads for now because there is NO WAY he can hold it for several hours yet. When you are home, take him out EVERY SINGLE hour, wait for potty, then praise the heck out of him when he goes. He will eventually catch on and be able to hold it longer (but 9 hours a day will be too long, even for an adult dog). Good luck to you! This too shall pass...it does get easier as they get older, if you are absolutely vigilant in your practices.

| Cooper is 3 months old. I have been putting cooper in the bathroom while i'm at work. I have been putting down puppy pads and i got some spray at the petstore that you are suppose to spray on the pads to make the pups want to go to that spot to urinate. As far as the pads, He shreds them and pees all over the rest of the floor LOL. When i say shred i mean a good 1-2 hours of cleaning up cotton and pee pad fibers. I try to come home on lunch but i just can't every day. I have noticed that he is peeing in one particular spot. I"m going to try putting the pee pad there tomorrow to see if that helps. He will probably just shred it again. I think it's a game to him LOL |

| My Jack will sometimes do the "walk and pee" trick. I really thought it was a way for him to mark. He is neutered but I have seen the walk and pee a few times and to me, it looked like he was marking his territory. I would try crate training or try the x-pen with him. Good luck!
