| Potty training and other training...HELP!! I have Rambo in his crate right now and he is whining a lot. I was told that I should crate train. I only had Rambo for 2 days, so I know it will take time. I put him in the cage at night after he falls asleep in my arms. Couple of hours go by I assume he has to go the bathroom and that is why he is crying/whining. Take him out, goes to the bathroom, falls asleep about 20-30 min later. This morning he woke up about 6:40. I took him out, played and I wanted him to eat but he would not eat. So I put him in the cage. And all he is doing is crying. I took him out and he curls right into my lap. I place him in front of the food to see if he will eat, he doesn't so I put in the cage and he is crying\whining his little heart out . I put a clock radio in next to his cage for noise. I am trying to put him on a schedule for when I will be here. Is this correct? Please help. I know this is based off of what I want to do in the end. But I would like to know if I am on the right track. PS.. Hearing him whining is breaking my heart.

| Okay, I just gave in and took him out the cage. I thought maybe he had to go the bathroom , so I took him out. But him back in for 20 min, went crazy, so now he laying on my stomach. I now he an feel my heart beat. Should I get him a toy that will simulate a heart beat? Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks

| For me crate training does not mean that you let him out and pee, eat and put back in. I do the opposite to crate train. If he not Happy, 5 in and then a break, 10 minutes in and a break, Make it a happy place a chew toy or a ball, yes in time you want it a place to be calm but first it was to be a place they will go in. Freeze a Kong and let him chew. Let him go in and out. If the goal is for him to be happy in a crate, if it to potty train he can be out for about an hour to play then he should be tired and sleep. Then toss a treat or two in as you put him in and pack the kennel room to room or you be still beside him till he goes to sleep. When he wakes take him out to pee and let him play for an hour. No need to leave a wee one to whine, you just slow down the task or break it into smaller steps, till he can handle it without the fuss. Whining means stress for him and you and you both do not need that. Just cause you slow it down or take more steps to get a problem solved does not mean the dog is getting away with anything. It is you respecting the dogs individual needs. Joy |

| I agree with YorkieMum! It sounds like your pup is spending an awful lot of time in his crate. Also, you don't want to use it for punishment; you want him to think that the crate is the best thing ever! Here's an excellent article on crate training: http://www.clickersolutions.com/arti...ining_Info.htm By the way, there is a tremendous amount of helpful info at the clickersolutions site. You might want to do some browsing around there. I do regularly! Good luck! |

| Ok, I am having the same issue here with the crate that Rambo's mom is but my main problem is that I definately agree now that 6wks is WAY to young to come home...Maddie does't even seem like she should have her eyes open she is so small.. And ALL she wants to do is get in my armpit or by my neck or between my legs... anywhere that simulates her litter mates and how they lay one top of each other and snuggle.. I have done everything that has been suggested on YT. She cried like a newborn litter and she walks like it is her first time and is ALWAYS looking for milk and sucking on things.. What should I do? |

| Rambo is 9 weeks old. He is used to being held a lot from the breeder and being a way from his brothers and sisters. I just put him in the crate and he stopped whining. He is taking a nap now. I am not going to keep him in all the time, but what I will need to is find a balance that will work for both of us. He will be in there when I am at work, and my mom who lives around the corner will come over for 1.5-2 hours before she goes to work to feed, play and walk Rambo. What I eventually want to do is leave the door open and put a bed in there and he can come and go as he pleases and have a set up where he can let me know it is time to go out. I truly thank you all for all the information. THANK YOU!! I will be giving progress reports.

Is there any possible way that she can go back to her momma dog for at least a couple of weeks (& maybe up to 4)? You're right - 6 weeks is awfully young. | |

| I have trained both a Shih-tzu and Pom. by crate training and now Gizmo(all males). I know my vet very well and I have done it exactly the way he told me too and it has worked. During the first few days(sometimes a few weeks) unless you are playing with him, feeding him, bathing him, or taking him to potty, he stays in the crate. I train to go outside in a certain spot in my yard. If he make a mistake inside, I blot or pick it up with TP or whatever and I take it(yes take it) to the spot you want him to go and put it under a rock or something(yucky for a few days). If you just clean it up and put it in the toilet, they learn to continue to potty there and it just goes away. They will associate the smell with the correct place to go. Every time you take in out of the crate during the training mode, go directly to potty. Gizmo is 18wks old and now he only gets put into the crate with the door closed at night. During the day he goes in by himself and goes to bed. When he wakes up now, he goes to the door so I will take him to potty. He has been a little harder than the other two breeds but I think it is because he is smaller. They do learn though. This has worked for me and a lot of people I know. Hope it helps.
