Potty training to go outside.

Okay- so I kind of have a routine down with Marley. Right when I wake up in the morning I let her eat and drink. Then I take her right outside and she usually poops and pees..after she does that I let her have some playtime inside. Then back to the crate she goes. I let her out to pee and poop maybe 3-4 times a day and I walk her around the complex. The rest of the time is spent either in her crate or on my bed where she won't potty. Is this the right technique or should I be trying something different? Yesterday she had an accident and pooped on the stairs.. So she knows to go outside but not that she isn't supposed to go inside yet. Is this normal?

Btw- she is 5 months old!
