| potty training can you train to go outside and use wee pads??? we are soon getting our puppy... soo much to learn, this site has helped a lot... my question is we are going to crate train her but we also have a playpen for during the day... we really want to train her to go outside, my hubby does not like the idea of training to use pee pads. is it ok to do both, like when she is in the playpen, have a pee pad. My concern is while we are at work the puppy will be with my mom and my daughter..they will take her out and so forth im just .im thinking it would be easier to throw away a pee pad then if the puppy goes on the floor... does anybody do both??? My thought woulds be only to put down pee pads when when she will be in the playpen and my mom might be doing something.. suggestions???? Thanks and I have been looking at crates and i know you use deviders when theyare small but once they are grown and trained how big of crate is good??? I bought one that my husband thought was to big... we have had dogs growing up but always large dogs.. so we are learning... Thanks again...Tracy |

| we used pee pads in their kennel when we were gone more than 4 hours at a time. they both learned to hold it more than 8 hours and we never have to clean them up, but at least it's an option if they need it. i also offer a pee pad when it's cold or raining but Sadie refuses and only will go outside. Bentley doesn't know the difference really either. mine are just so outside trained that pee pads are around but they don't really know why. but i believe you can train for both and i hope you get better answers |

| my 2 chihuahus i have had since they were puppies, they are pee pad trained and also will go outside in my fenced in backyard or when walked on a leash. it really works out well for me especially in the winter when its so cold and snowy. i dont have to take them out. my yorkie i got when she was 2 1/2 years old. she had never used a pee pad before, so she is not used to it at all and doesnt like using them. i highly recommend the washable pee pads. i didnt know about them at first and i found my puppies were shredding up the disposable ones

| My boys are both pad and outdoor trained very successfully. They have a pad available 24 hours a day, but we walk a lot and they potty outdoors too. They know if we visit another home or a store, they have to potty outdoors. I would advise being consistent. If your pup is going to have access to a pad at home part of the day, she should always have access to a pad. I think it would be very confusing to have a pad available only sometimes. It would be extra confusing to combine crate training, outdoors, and pad.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali and Roxie were pee pad trained as puppies and will not ever go outside, even if on a walk. Pixie was 13 months when I got her and I tried pee pad training and she wouldn't use them. She goes outside. Nikki was around 16 when I got him and his previous owner lived in an apartment and walked him 3 times a day. When he came here he took to the pee pads right away but will also go outside. So I have a mixture.

| Hi all It looks like a bunch of people in this thread have trained their pups to use pee pads and go outside. This is what I am interested in doing. I was just wondering how you guy managed to train them to do this?? My new pup will be coming home at the end of May and I would really really like to start off on the right foot. My previous dog was trained to go outdoors only, but with my work schedule I would feel much better knowing my pup won't have to hold it if I can't make it home during the day. Thanks much for all and any help! |

| I would completely pee pad train in the beginning because they aren't supposed to go outside on the grass until they are 4months old and have all their shots anyway so pee pad in in the beginning and once they are old enough to go outside on a walk do that as well. We do both and this is how I trained Teddi.

| Hi Tracy! I am Tracy also. My little Teddy is only 13 weeks old, so we're just starting on the potty-training journey. I work from home, so right now I take him outside frequently. I also have twin 12 year old boys, and it's baseball season, so twice a week Teddy is left at home for a few hours while we attend the games. Teddy has an x-pen with his bed and a pad inside which he will readily use while we are out. I just wish he would get the hang of going back in his pen if he has to go and I don't realize it instead of using my carpets (which I think he thinks is grass. lol), but I'm sure that will come eventually. Good luck with your puppy!
