| Playpen for Den Hello fellow Yorkie lovers. I shall be able to bring my new baby Yorkie home in a 3-4 weeks or so. I am thinking I'd like to have a playpen right in the middle of my den so that I can keep an eye on him at all times. I want to be able to fit his crate inside of it (maybe), and definately have a "designated potty area" until his control over functions matures a bit and then we can graduate to another potty area. Ideally, it should also have enough room for him to be able to jump around a bit. I don't mind that it will take up all the center space in my room. I am thinking that hard plastic would be easiest to clean (not porous). I can't find anything close to this on the net. I noticed some playpens have tops on them, is this necessary to keep them from climbing/jumping out? How high should it be for a puppy who will mature to about 4.5 lbs? The plain wire ones look difficult to clean (inside a house) and just aren't cute. Any suggestions? I figure that members of YorkieTalk would be the best experts for this question. Thanks! |

| Congrats on getting your new baby soon, he is a cutie!! Well I only have the metal ones. I don't think they are any harder to clean but I do like the look of the plastic ones much better. I wonder which one would be sturdier though and which one has more flexibility. I don't know if it is an issue with the plastic ones but I think the metal ones are sometimes too easy to move around. Some yorkies are known for climbing or jumping which is why a top is good to have. My girl Destiny is only 5lbs but can climb out any size one very easily. Most expens have it where you can purchase a top for it. Walmart has some plastic ones. Walmart.com: IRIS 8 Panel Indoor / Outdoor Heavy-Duty Pen, White: Dogs They also have soft sided pens now that have a top and a bottom. These look great but I'm not sure if they would move around too much because of being too light or if the puppy would be able to chew through it? A lot of members have boughten these and have been very happy with them though. NEW 45" PET PUPPY DOG PLAYPEN EXERCISE PEN KENNEL GREEN - eBay (item 370487898113 end time Mar-04-11 11:00:12 PST)

| I use a metal x-pen from Petco. It is set up in my den. I have a pad, food and water dishes and his bed in it. I also bought a piece of linoleum at Lowe's to put under the pen. This all works great. Copper is about 4 lbs. He does not jump over the pen or climb out. The height of the pen is 2 feet. I like the metal x-pen because I can fold it up to travel and I can also change the shape of it in various ways to suit my needs. Good luck with your new furbaby!

| Thanks. Still trying to decide on which playpen. Also wrestling with names. Although I'm going to wait until he's been home a few days and I can observe his unique personality some, I'm thinking of these names: Romeo, Caesar, Chewbacca, Cookie Monster, Beatlejuice (if I have to call him a lot), Einstein, and Charlie Horse (after my son's favorite childhood toy). Am so excited- only a week & a half left till pick-up day!!! |

| I borrowed a superyard xt pen from a friend to use while working in my basement on weekends (framing & drywalling it), so my puppy can be down there with me. It doesn't have a top, but its pretty sturdy & she's not been able to climb the sides yet. It's just like this one, only a few years older. North State Superyard XT Portable Playard and Gate - Walmart.com I like Romeo & Charlie...but you're right you need a day or two to see what name fits his personality. My ZoE was gonna be a Lexy...but the name didn't fit her...might have had something to do with the fact that my college-age son kept saying it was a pornstar name...sexylexy...lol So we went with ZoE & it fits her.

| I like the soft sided play yard...they have a floor in them for accidents and very easy to clean...and they have a mesh top that can be zipped up once they learn they can climb or jump out...I have 2 a 44x24 and a 57x36...I order the 44x24 first and realized after I got it he needed one a little bigger so I got the 57x36 and its huge, enough space for food/water/bed on one end and potty pads on the other and lots of space to play I use the little one upstairs in my room with only his bed in it for bedtime. I ordered mine online off Ebay.
