| What do I do with 7 yr old terror? This 3 1/2 pound dog is becoming a terrorist in my house. Any time I leave, even to just get the mail, he pees on the couch where I sit. If I have company he pees on me or both of us. He poops on the floor if we separate him from us. He tries to bite my man friend when he comes to visit. He (friend) doesn't even want to come here anymore. I have tried to discipline him by putting him in his crate and he just barks and throws tantrums until the noise makes me let him out. Do you think I need a professional trainer to help me or do I just forget about a life of my own?

| Is this a new addition to your home, or did Dudley grow up with you? Peeing on you and guests is called "submissive peeing." It can be a difficult behavior to stop, but it isn't hopeless. Don't use the crate for punishment. Crates are supposed to safe places. Plus, he knows that he can bark his way out of it. First thing is a wellness check with your vet. Second is a good schedule, a routine for activities: eating, sleeping, exercise, training. This is the foundation for giving a dog a sense of confidence and security. Does he get plenty of exercise and has he been socialized? Working with a trainer would be ideal. If not, I recommend Victoria Stilwell's books and DVDs. You can also find her show, "It's Me or the Dog" online. There are many training exercises to combat the problem behavior that you are seeing. You don't have to give up your life, but you will have to invest time and patience in training.
