| ![]() I have 2 rescues, one of which is a puppy mill rescue. Max was an owner surrender to the shelter but he hates the crate. I think he was punished in his crate by his previous owner. I absolutely don't ever crate either of them. I don't even allow it at the groomer's. I have the crate set up in my room, but they never go in it. Actually, if there is a toy in there that they want, they lean in as far as they can without putting a paw inside ![]() I'm sure they could learn to like the crate over time, but I don't push it. They are pretty good, and when I leave they stay downstairs which is tile. In your case, perhaps you could block off an area like the kitchen?

| ![]() I don't believe in caging dogs. Would you want to be confined to a cage all day? I've never caged a dog and never had an issue. It's their house too as far as I'm concerned and the least I can do is give them the freedom to roam the house while I'm gone (doggy-proofed, of course).

| ![]() Being a puppymill rescue, perhaps the cage brings back bad memories... The last Best Friends "Pup my Ride" that we took part in, we had one little Yorkie females, about 5 y/o and 5 lbs. She was so pretty and loved to be in your arms. When she was handed to me from the Best Friend Volunteer, we had to take down their tag info and put them into our crates and into our car and await our next pup. Well...this female was going NUTS!!! crying, screaming, scratching at the crate, spinning and spinning and spinning inside. I honestly thought she was going to have a heart attack. So I took her out a bunch of times and held her, and during this time she was a angel...But once back into the crate, the stress of being in it came out...I can only imagine her first 5 years trapped in a crate, it must have been horrible ![]() Maybe try an expen for him ![]() |

But some dogs REALLY need a crate, lol. I dogsit a 8 month old Lab puppy and a 1 year old Rottweiler. You leave the Rottie in the house (with what you THINK everything was picked up....) for all of 30 minutes, and you come back and it looks like the house has been robbed. He DESTROYS the place. And he's entirely too big for an expen. He gets tons of exercise including me who gets over there mid-day. So until you've experienced a dog that will eat coaches, chairs, tables, and anything else, I wouldn't rule out crates. ![]() Crates, just like any thing else, can be used in a bad way. It's about making it a positive experience... throwing a treat in there, and then letting them come right back out... or just leaving it open during the day so it's not always seen as a 'locked in for the day' place.

| ![]() Why would you say that? I saw nothing that wasn't positive. Maybe I missed something. I agree that maybe the cage/crate might bring back horrible memories. Good luck to you!! |

Best to use x-pen w/pee pads when your gone. Or, as someone suggested. Block off kitchen w/child gate. Hope this helps. |

| ![]() I am not a fan of crate training either... Maybe for bigger puppies it is necessary , because they will destroy all your stuff. BUt, for the toy dogs, I believe in either closing off an area for the dog to be safe in, or use a expen. Potty pads have a scent that dogs are attracted to , which makes it easier to train . Take the dog to the potty pads just when he wakes up, eats , or starts lifting his leg, just pick him up and put him there. Place the pads where he might often go potty and be presistent. I have trained 2 of my dogs , and working on a third now. I feel extra strongly about a puppy mill dog who has already spent most of his time caged.

| ![]() I crated my dogs while they were being potty trained and when I knew I couldn't trust them. I've always HATED crating them, but for a while, I had to do it because they would get in to stuff while I was gone. My yorkie hated it and I had to literally put him in his crate. But my other dog would go in no problem. He liked it. Neither of them hang out in their crates when the doors are open either, so I finally just put them away. I think they're old enough now where they've grown out of the destructive phase, so they have free rein of the house. They get daily walks as well, so that helps burn off energy and they're too tired to get in to too much trouble.
