| ![]() Okay, so my question is, I will be getting my yorkie baby in a couple weeks and I am planning on training it to go outside and from everything I have heard and read, yorkies are really hard to housebreak, I think it will be even harder for me because my puppy will be 16 weeks by the time I get it, and my breeder uses pee pads with the puppies so they really arent even accustomed to going outside too much, anyways my question is, has or does anyone here use a litter box with their Yorkies? I was at the ikc dog show in Chicago this weekend and saw alot of people buying the litter pans for their dogs. I was wondering how easy it would be to teach it to use one. I still plan on trying to housebreak him to go outside but would just like some input on this whole litter box training thing! ![]() Cara ![]() |

| ![]() Hi russell04...Congrats on your upcoming adoption of your little one. I honestly do not think you will have troubles housebreaking your pup even though you mentioned he/she will be 16 weeks with any method of your choosing. I honestly have not ever tried the litter box method of potty training. I've seen them and was interested but for Schatzie the puppy pads seemed to be working just fine. I will be interested as you to hear what other members have to say about "litter box training".

| ![]() I adopted my pup just shy of when he was 6 months old. The breeder told me he was doggie door trained. He wasn't perfectly trained when we brought him home but he has made the adjustment pretty easily. For the most part, he relieves himself outdoors but when I miss the que, he uses the puppy pad by the door we exit to to potty. Works for us. I wouldn't want to purchase a younger pup (if I get a second one) because I didn't have the struggles most have with potty training. JMO

| Welcome to YT. Congrats for your new baby. Please pose pics when you get ur little one. Regarding the litter box. Gucci uses the pee pads 90% of the time. She still has some accidents but rare. I dont know anything about the little boxes. Hopefully someone else here can help you with that. Once again welcome. :Puppy: |

| ![]() I have the litter box but I am just now starting to use it. My puppy only seems interested in my carpet right now!! Someone else posted a reply to my thread though and said her 9 week old puppy was using the litter box with only a few accidents.

| ![]() I've tried to get my yorkies to use the litter box. I quit doing it. The problem wasn't that they weren't using it but after they use it they tend to kick or dig in the litter box. I would have litter all over the bathroom floor! It was too much trouble! Now they all go outside to potty! |

| ![]() Cara, I would not even try the puppy litter, if i was you I did and it was so messy.here is what i am currently trying, the pee pads, but i'm using a large see through storage bin,and i lay the pee pads in there, and i just put him in there after sleep time.play time, after he eats, and when he goes i give him a piece of the lil bits greenies and he loves those so hopefully he will start to understand that everytime he goes potty on the pad he will get one of those yummy greenies.I also never give him a grennies unless he goes potty ehere he is supposed to that way he knows the only way he will ever get a greenie is to go potty.I hope this helps.Cara i do use a litter box with a pee pad inside of it at night when i keep him gated in the kitchen and i'm hoping eventually he will go on his own without me having to put him in the storage bin all the time. The whole reason for the big clear storage bin is because my jimmy will walk right off the pad and i'm tired of trying to constantly put him back on the pad so if I put him in the bin and it's see through he won't be so scared because he can still see me but i can also so something else while waiting for him to go.goodluck cara it will be a struggle for both of us but with patience and repetition we will have such a sweet companion for years to come and how wonderful will that be linda Last edited by quincyboy; 03-01-2005 at 02:50 PM. |
