| Growling When Picked Up I have a little 9 month rotten egg which I love VERY much, however, he has a bad habit of growling when you go to pick him up. But once he's in your arms he licks and loves. He follows me everywhere I go. When we sit on the couch he often lays belly up in my lap like a little rag doll, so I know he is comfortable in his own skin and does love me as much as I love him. Still this behavior has me bothered. I'm fairly sure he is healthy unless their is possibly a underlying condition I'm unaware of. He has regular vet visits. Any ideas? If this is a behavioral problem, I would like to correct it. Thanks! |

| My daughter has a beagle mix that growls when you stop petting her! It is just her way of 'talking', and telling us that she is not ready for us to stop! We will start and stop petting just to see how many times she will growl at us!! But her tail is always wagging and we know thst it is not a serious growl. |

| Yorkies don't like to be suddenly picked up. That is the independence in them. Try a slower approach or try to teach him to come to you. I really think what you're seeing is the independence.

| Interesting. Thank you. As has been noted on this forum, these little dogs are different than the big breeds, which is what I'm used to. |

YT Addict | Picked Up Hi ~ My new puppy doesn't growl but he does back up and run when I try to pick him up. My breeder suggested the following and it has worked for us: Offer a treat (one he loves). Keep offering until you can pick him up and then GIVE the treat. Do not give the treat until you have picked him up. This has worked very well so far and the backing away has been a lot less. I am not a trainer or vet but in my previous experience with my baby Gizmo, the only time he ever growled was if he was uncomfortable to the point of super ouchy. Perhaps changing the way you pick him up as well? Coming from the side and scooching down to scoop instead of from the top and front? (If of course this has relevence to you). I hope this helps! Hugs to your babies...
